Stayokay Domburg

The rural location near the sea is very beautiful. The hostel is housed in a very well maintained seventeenth-century castle with a moat.

We arrived on a summer evening. The room on the west side of the castle was very hot and could not be effectively ventilated because the building lacks mechanical ventilation and the windows cannot be opened wide. We had to sleep with the door ajar. Consequently we were kept awake all night by parties and by drunken guests stumbling into our room. In the morning we were woken up early by drunken guests urinating out of their windows into the moat. If that sort of thing doesn't bother you then this hostel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Choose a room not on the west side in the summer.

If you've stayed in a Stay Okay Hostels then you can feel pretty confident about the generous breakfast and overall cleanliness and this one met those expectations. It is very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. It was quiet and in a beautiful setting.

Maybe I am oldschool, but I stayed at this place years ago (in 1992) when it still had the atmosphere of a real youth hostel in a castle setting. Loved it, although you have to make sacrfices in terms of comfort, but that is what a hostel is all about.
Nowadays, the rooms are steril and spartanic, the matraces are uncomfortable, but the prices are on hotel level. Still a nice bar though, and the surroundings do the rest.

Tha place is wonderful, Domburg is a very beautiful small city, and the castle is beautiful as in a fairy tale. But the room was unfortunately so dirty, full of settled dust, spiderwebs on the windows, ... The "bathroom" was unacceptable, the drain in the shower was pretty blocked, so that the water stood... The breakfast was *very* simple, they didn't even have warm milk or boiled eggs... And now the highlight: 14 Euros for a dinner!!! Too much for a youth hostel, even in restaurants in the city one could find something better *and* cheaper to eat... I have stayed in many hostels before, and the service there was the worst one of all! :-(

When I rolled up on the bike outside the Chateux I was blown away. This place has a moat, lakes, a manicured box hedge rear garden by another lake and breakfast included in the price. There were 6 of us staying in one of the turret rooms at 35 euros per person , it was simple and clean with amazing views out to the gardens.
Breakfast was good with a great selection of different breads, hams, cheeses and Bonne Maman preserves + the usual cereals. The setting is something else and Domburg is only a 15 min walk down the road. You just would not get the chance to stay in somewhere like this in the UK for 35 euros a night. Would recomend.

As a hostel, Stayokay Domburg is accommodated in a truly exceptional building: Westhove Castle. This 13th-century castle, complete with turrets and a moat, is at walking distance from the beach. The hostel's rooms are both in the main building of the castle and in one of the two carriage houses. The castle was fully renovated in 2004, but has retained its nostalgic atmosphere, including the bar, of course. The two terrace cafes offer a fantastic view of the surrounding dune landscape. ... more   less
