Everything is traditional in here. Starting with the architecture and design. It has ground and one floor. Even when you visit it alone, there are lots of stuff what you can see. There are lighting spots on different objects that takes your attention.

Pancake, crepes actually, are a must. Actually that's why you are there.

English menu and the kindness of the staff it's also a big plus.

Scenery, food, service all is quite perfect if you want a real dutch time for lunch or diner.
Prices are correct, pancakes are delicious.

It turns out De Smickel is sorta, kinda famous in the Netherlands. I casually mentioned to an acquaintance in Amsterdam that we were renting a place in Soest and the only thing he came up with was De Smickel.

And no wonder, the make great big, delicious Dutch pancakes. Savory or sweet, you'll find something there to tickle your fancy.

But... their service sucks. It's not that it's bad, it's that it's indifferent. No scowling waiters or rude servers, nothing like that. It's more along the lines of really not knowing how to deliver good service, or not caring to do so. We went there in the middle of the day with the place almost empty. They had as many waitresses working as tables seated. It still took forever to have one of them come over, to order drinks, to get our food. De Smickel is a very large place, so finding wait staff to help us out wasn't easy.

At first I attributed this to cultural differences. Maybe, I thought, that's the way service is in the Netherlands. But it isn't. I've been to other restaurants, and even to other pancake houses in the area (10 minutes away by bicycle) and the service was so much faster and cordial. A pity really, because De Smickel can produce really good food.

What a great place for our first dutch restaurant When is the last time you had dinner in a restaurant with a thatched roof? The best decision we made was the pannekoeken. This is a great meal, with all kinds of options. Be ready for the service though. Throughout the whole week we came to realize that "they" just do not rush service. The service is in English, very friendly and helpful, but is Not fast. But do not let this discourage you, De Smickel is a great place to eat. When you're done, take a walk in the neighbourhood. It is soo unlike standard Ontario neighbourhoods

I had dinner here yesterday and was amazed by the place. It is such a magical restaurant with a great interior. Smickel's main audience are children, but adults as well can enjoy a good pancake.

We ordered 4 hearty pancakes (chicken liver, panza vegetarian, egg + bacon, I forgot the last one) and received our pancakes very quickly. They were very tasty, although some more seasoning would not have been bad. The pancakes are served with curry ketchup, luckily in a separate container. The pancakes were so big, that only one of us could finish, we could take the rest home. The pancakes are quite pricey (16-18EUR), but once in a while you can indulge.

It was a nice restaurant to go once when you are in the neighborhood, certainly great with kids.
