“Comfortable hotel without pretentions in good location.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 April 2012

I like this hotel. We stayed for a night when visiting family nearby and it confirmed earlier positive impressions from a previous visit. One great advantage for us as we make quite a lot of short visits is that, unlike many resort hotels, they seem happy to book you for individual nights rather than insisting on a week. It's part of a Spanish chain and some of their hotels appear highly aspirational; this one is not like that at all. It carries a four star rating and its rooms and overall ambience are characteristic of Spanish hotels in that category. However it has quite a low key atmosphere, at least out of season, with quiet public areas and not much bustle in the bars and restaurant.

It is staffed by very cheerful, efficient, receptionists and the bar staff were prompt and amenable. We only ate the inclusive buffet breakfast and some late night bar snacks. The former was generous in scale, a bit pedestrian in quality. The latter were reasonably priced and of decent quality. The location is a definite plus. It's situated a short walk out of the centre of Platja d'Aro which is a not untypical Costa Brava resort; less brash than Lloret down the coast but still with overt evidence of mass tourism. However despite the tourists the Costa Brava manages to retain some of its striking appearance and the hotel is located above a small, relatively private, bay complete with beach. A few steps from the rear of the hotel and you would be there. The coastal footpath runs along the rear of the bay and walking in either direction accesses other coves and small bays. Some of the hotel rooms have views over the sea although the structure of the hotel means you may be looking out over a roof. There is a fair sized terrace swimming pool also overlooking the beach and sea. The hotel has a small spa which my wife patronised as part of our room deal; I suspect that some arrangements demand extra payment for the facility. You do have to pay for parking and that is effectively unavoidable as there doesn't appear to be any immediately available nearby free parking. Although the hotel is just off a main road [less busy now that Platja d'Aro has a by-pass] passing traffic doesn't impinge on the hotel. In any event as far as I could see most rooms are away from the road.

The room we had overlooked the pool with a clear view out towards the Mediterranean. It was sufficiently spacious, although not huge, with a well equipped bathroom although I yearn for the walk-in shower rather than the one over a bath favoured by most of the Spanish hotels I visit. There was a little noise from the room above I suspect because they had the balcony windows open but we slept well and without interference. The hotel seems to have and affinity with petrol-heads; our first visit coincided with a congress of Harley-Davison chapters and on this occasion it was some kind of Mini-Cooper rally so despite the season the hotel was reasonably busy. To its credit this was handled without fuss and certainly we never felt affected even at breakfast which was quite busy.

Overall then we took away a very positive view of the Silken chain and in particular this hotel. It doesn't try to be something it isn't; it provides a straightforward, efficient, comprehensive and cheerful service in pleasant surroundings at a good location. The price is competitive [we paid about 70 euros for bed and breakfast for 2] although clearly high season may be different. I would certainly recommend it on the evidence of our two visits and I would certainly use other hotels in the chain if the occasion presented itself.

Room Tip: You could specify a sea view.

This was a 7 night golf trip with 17 friends. This hotel is well situtated close to plenty of nice courses. It was early in the season so we didn't get to enjoy the outdoor facilities, but they sure looked very nice. Breakfast was fine with plenty of choice. Rooms have a nice balcony, with a good view of the beach. We didn't have dinner there any evening so I can't comment on that. The bar staff were helpful and worked around my poor Spanish skills!

The location is good, just a short walk from the town.

Te only complaint I had was the wifi access. It worked ok (once I got a code from reception) but only in the lobby and bar areas. There was no signal in the rooms.

The wi-fi signal has been improved and now wi-fi is available from all rooms in the hotel, also in outdoor areas (terrace, swimming-pool, spa...). We take all our guests opinions and comments as an opportunity to improve, and they are highly appreciated.

I cannot speak highly enough of the staff and service we received at San Jorge in September when we were married. I'm not quite sure the hotel knew what to expect when 80 english people arrived over the course of three days to celebrate our wedding, however they could not have been more accomodating and completely embraced the atmosphere.

The hotel is set on an idylic cliff with access to two small private beaches which are just beautiful, the pool is a good size and overlooked by a modern spa. The hotel facilties are all of a good standard, we had stayed in an incredibly large suite with balcony overlooking the sea, the view was amazing.

Our wedding day was fantastic, the staff at San Jorge and in particular our wedding planner Santi worked so hard to ensure we had our perfect day. But maybe most importantly food was incredible!

Room Tip: Ask for sea or a shore room, there are some cheaper rooms at the front of the hotel but they overloo...

I have been in this hotel two times:
First time we stayed one night in a weekend in January 2011. We had a nice spacious and refurbished room above the lounge of the hotel, with great views on the beautiful beaches. Service and food in the restaurant and the breakfast was outstanding. In the low season promotion that we had booked a short stay of an hour in the spa was included for free. As we were the only guests, they did not mind that we stayed a bit longer.

The second time when came back in June 2011 we stayed two nights, but we were a bit disappointed. We got a room in the older part of the hotel. These rooms are smaller and do not have a direct view on the beach. They do have a terrace. When we arrived there was no soap nor shampoo in the room, and we had to ask twice before they brought some. The service in the restaurant and breakfast seemed very chaotic and was not as good as in our previous stay. The dinner buffet (no menu this time) had very little choise and the quality was mediocre. During the breakfast the personnel was not very friendly. They clearly had difficulty to refill the buffet on time, all the time things were missing.

Having said all this, I still believe it is a nice and quiet hotel on a beautiful location and perfect if you want to enjoy the Costa Brava for some days. But better come in low season.

However, the hotel did not live up to expectations. We traveled by car from Barcelona to Coasta Brava, and had a little trouble finding the hotel. Our room was good with a good view, but our traveling companions had no view and were able to change rooms. I felt we were being "charged" all the time...........a safe in the closet, but one had to pay to get key to use......beach towels for pool and beach, but one had to pay at the desk, and return to the desk each day for a new towel. Breakfast was average, and dining staff did not keep up with the demand for certain items. Dinner buffet was below average..............quality of food was not what we expcted from a Silken property.........certainly not 4 star. We did have a good pizza in the bar one evening, though!

Room Tip: be sure to ask for upper floor with a view of the Sea, as most rooms have paitios or balconys
