“Lovely winter break”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 April 2012

Booked this at the last minute -chose it for location, near Papagayo beach but walking distance to Playa Blanca (a good walk -40 minutes) - and as 5* all-inclusive. Room was lovely, food excellent, service very good, pool great and dancing lessons too! It's a very large complex and we wouldn't want to go in high season but it was perfect as a winter break, would definitely book again.

Room Tip: Superior double facing the pools and sea was fantastic.

We have just returned from Dream Gran Castillo and we have had a great holiday. We were a party of 11 and did have a few concerns about the hotel at first. When we booked up we picked a small 5* hotel but with the joining of the sister hotel it has become a big resort which is not what we originally wanted for our holiday!! However I was assured that we would be allocated rooms in the 5* part of the hotel and guess what this did not happen!! After some insistence we were moved to our correct location with some sarcasm from one of the male reception staff!! Putting this behind us we settled into our lovely rooms and great location near the main restaurant and pool. The hotel's staff were all friendly and very helpful so we relaxed and started to unwind for our 2 week holiday but this was abruptly disrupted when the kids club lost one of our children, so pleased be warned if you have a family holiday with children I do not recommend the kids club at all. The Manager was very apologetic but the two girls who ran the kids club seemed completely oblivious to what had happened. We yet again put this behind and enjoyed our holiday. Like all the other reviews the food, drinks and service were very good and we did enjoy some of the evening entertainment especially the African Acrobats. The beautiful pool area was cleaned consistently and our rooms were also cleaned daily to a good standard and it was lovely having our children teddies and pjs arranged from them, making our room feel homely. It was a real shame the holiday got off to rocky start but it was such a good hotel that we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would we go back - maybe!!

Overall a fairly good stay. This review is based on a family of four - two adults with two kids ages two and five years. Our kids love swimming and we expected the pools to be better in terms of temperature. The kids' slide pool was indeed freezing even when you got in there and acclimatized. The other (very small) kids' pools were heated as was the main pool but the latter could and should have been more so. Management must know this already and it amazes me why they can't just turn it up a few degrees. The beach outside the hotel is too rocky for swimming and pretty much everyday there is that cooling wind and those cloudy spells (regardless of the time of year...). So, Management, if you are reading this, please consider heating all your pools at peak times / busy weeks. We travelled during Easter 2012 holidays for 10 days and the place was busy...

I went next door to the four star hotel to have a quick look around as I'm always looking for good places going forward and it looked quite good. The pools had much more space around them and the heated ones were heated properly - better than our's...probably go there next time as this is our number one consideration in Winter / Spring. As long as the kids are happy we are...Also, it is slightly more elevated and the views from the pools and bars were fantastic. I cannot imagine the food or service or rooms to be "that much" different to that of the Gran Castillo.

Back to the Gran Castillo...

Food-wise, it was definitely more than acceptable with plenty of choice. The only thing that detracts from that relaxing atmosphere (if possible with young children) is that the staff are just too rushed off their feet. Not a deal breaker for us but it might be for some. Most large hotels (regardless of the number of Stars) suffer from this in my experience.

Rooms-wise, we were over the other side and were in a duplex which was big but a bit bare and non-descript but fine.

The a la carte restaurants were OK but again just too busy and we felt rushed. Clearly, if you're not going peak time then you should be fine. Food was OK to good.

Entertainment (evening) was very good in my view - especially for the kids. This is based on a lot of hotel-based entertainment in Spain, Balearics, and the Canaries.
Good Magician, Acrobats and the In-House team were good given the resources etc. Venue is fine if a bit cramped. Could always get a space somewhere...

Those "Foto Team" guys seem to be omnipresent around the pools but very polite and engaging. We spent quite a few Euros on their photos of mainly our kids playing and being thrown around in the pool.

So, overall, fairly good but for us (our kids) those pools need to be warmer....especially if you're spending most of the day around the pool!

Room Tip: Rooms are better in the main part of the hotel apparently...

I just returned from a week at Gran Castillo and generally had a lovely time. We booked an all inclusive holiday with a Junior suite.

The room was AMAZING! Absolutely huge, well fitted out and with a balcony you could play five-a-side football on.

The pools were great, but sadly too cold for me to go in at this time of year. My two small children were far more forgiving though and spent most of their days in a pool with several waterslides in it.

Food is a mixed bag. The buffets I thought were varied and good, with lots of food cooked fresh at various stations, but by the end of a week it can be quite repetitive. They have 2 restaurants on site, included as part of the all inclusive deal: one Chinese and one Italian, which is great for breaking up the monotony of the buffet.

Finally, if you're going for the evening entertainment, don't bother. The kids thought it was great, but they are 6 & 4 respectively. If you like seeing the animation team dancing and miming to the Backstreet Boys you might be in luck :-)

That said, the location was great and the walk to the marina along the seafront was lovely and manageable by relatively small children. Would I go back? Yes.

Room Tip: We had room 3277, which is supposed to be one of the better Junior Suites

Myself and my partner stayed at the Dream Gran Castillo just before the school easter holidays kicked in, for one week, which we booked through lowcostholidays. We cannot fault any element of our holiday; the flights, transfers, hotel, food and location were all top notch.

The Dream Gran Castillo is a big hotel, with lots of different bars and places to eat; you really don't need to leave the hotel if you don't want to. The food was excellent in all three restaurants (buffet style, Chinese & Italian). In particular the Italian was lovely, and we ended up going back a second night for exactly the same meal, it was that nice. We were surprised that our all inclusive included pretty much anything you wanted, including cocktails and branded spirits. The local lager on tap at the resort is also really tasty, and not your usual local pish.

All the staff were really friendly and helpful, and the place was spotlessly clean. The room we had was massive, with a huge bathroom and lounge area. We didn't have a sea facing balcony which didn't make a blind bit of difference - the view on the other side of the mountains is just as relaxing. There are several pools (though be warned; the pool local to the buffet restaurant fills up quickly, and everyone ignores the fact your not supposed to reserve loungers with towels - but then again, where doesn't that happen!). The hotel makes a lot of effort to provide evening entertainment, and trust us, after a few drinks, it can be hilarious

Playa Blanca harbour is about fifteen minutes walk, with another five minutes before you hit the main tourist beach. In the other direction are lots of quieter beaches which barely had anyone on when we were there. Be warned; we think one of them may be a nudie beach! The area in general is really peaceful, which is exactly what we wanted - Do not go to Playa Blanca if you are looking for lots to do and plenty of nightlife; it isn't that kind of place, and we were thankful for it.

Thank-you to the staff and management team of the hotel; we will definately be recommending you to family and friends.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Like a grand castle which majestically dominates the seascape of the AtlanticOcean and its islands, the magnificent GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO is erected in the charming area of Playa Blanca, in the south of the volcanic isle par excellence: Lanzarote. With the conviction that elegance and comfort should come naturally, this Hotel is a tribute to 16th century Canary history and colonial architecture, inspired by the "Castle of San José" and the typical landscape of the island, blending in with the environment. The building is divided into different zones which maintain their colonial style, where the white facades and volcanic stone contrast with the backdrop of the deep blue ocean. A charming interior courtyard of Arab inspiration bathes the reception area with light, and the contemporary décor and pale colours create a warm and very elegant atmosphere. GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO pampers every detail of the rooms and suites, which have breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding scenery. They are decorated in a contemporary style, with marine touches, light-coloured wood and pale colours, creating a pleasant atmosphere full of light. The discerning selection of restaurants and cuisines serve Canary, national and international specialities. There are conference rooms featuring spearhead technology, and various outdoor zones for events of different kinds. The "Vitanova SPA" thalassotherapy centre provides the benefits of thermal seawater, and specific treatments for the body and soul. The Hotel features a wide range of facilities and services. ... more   less
