....and it's not what we'd class as a 5 star hotel in the UK.

HOWEVER, the amenities of the hotel are fantastic, and would probably match that of a 4-5 star hotel.

The pool was HUGE, and the pool area was, although busy, very quiet, which was great for being able to lay back a relax. Not too many waiters around the pool.

The casino was a great night out. Lots & lots of machines & some table game also. TIP - the drinks in the casino bar are cheaper than the bar of the hotel, which is around 400 yards away!

If the rooms were a little more modern then this would be a 5 start review.

Booked hotel for on beach/boardwalk location and to hear sound of the waves from sea front balcony.
Arrived Faro airport and took a transfer from Airport(STORK pre-booked) and took motorway (extra 5 euro) arrived in hotel within the hour.
Unfortunately the room (127) they allocated to us was on the first floor just above the kitchen exhaust ducting and between the odour and noise there was no point in sitting on the sea facing balcony. Requested change of room to higher floor and away from kitchen vents but no other room available for first night and advised they would try the next morning - fair enough, went to the beach which was great and just in front of the hotel, which has sun loungers on the beach (10 euro day for two + umbrella). You get towels from the pool level attendant which you can use in hotel and on the beach.
Breakfast the next morning on the lower level was good - a reasonable selection of British and European breakfast buffet style, but busy. You can order espresso (free). As you enter the first room is where the food is and there is another room adjoining which is quieter, which is where we ate. Unfortunately this is the domain of one waiter who is rather odd, wiping plates with the table cloth, throwing table cloths on the tables and bringing the leftover trolley close to diners tables while he cleared up, not very appetising !
There is a casino which we didn't visit, but otherwise there is a nice salt water swimming pool with plenty of sun beds and umbrellas with a very nice pool bar and restaurant ( excellent gazpacho soup and smoked salmon) reasonably priced. On the reception level there is the terrace bar with a nice outlook above the pool and overlooking the beach and sea with service to the table, although this can be slow at times.
Overall staff friendly and helpful.
The second day they changed our room to the other side of the hotel on the second floor with a balcony facing the sea, where we could hear the waves so were well pleased.
Unfortunately during the night there was an overpowering smell of sewerage which woke me up and after checking the bathroom which was fine, realised it was coming from outside, so put the air-conditioner on higher and made sure the inter-connecting door between the bedroom and hall to the door was open as the inlet vent is just in front of the door. Strangely the next morning went on the balcony and the air had cleared and was fine. I read that Portimao was having problems with their sewerage so guess that was the problem, but a very strange experience.
There are plenty of restaurants along the street in front of the hotel ( Café del Mar recommended, left out of the hotel about 400 - 500 ft up the road towards the centre. There is also a 7 day a week supermarket Super Mercado Pao Quente ( turn left out of hotel and first right ( ignore supermarket on corner - very expensive) and follow road around corner - they have a good selection of water, fruit, bakery items and groceries at reasonable prices.
Rooms clean ( some minor black mould around bath) and good water pressure. Beds good - hard pillows.
Location is excellent for beach, restaurants, views and bars and is not noisy - get second floor room or higher on left side of hotel facing sea. Avoid first floor on right side of hotel.
Couldn't get wifi to work most times and was erratic.

Room tip: 2nd floor and above left side facing sea

Excellent Hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Heated pool was a real benefit and there were plenty of sunbeds available. Just a short walk down some steps to get on to beach. Really good breakfast offered also offering fruit, continental selection and cooked eggs, bacon etc. Cannot fault our stay and we were fortunate enough to have sea views in adjoining rooms as there were 4 of us over 2 rooms. I shall definitely be back in this hotel which is conveniently located but far enough away from main strip so it is peaceful etc.

Great Location near to all the shops bars etc. Hotel is looking a bit tired but if you are going as a fly and flop holiday its perfectly adequate. Staff are very helpful and the Reception staff are very friendly and helpful.

Room tip: If you spend a lot of time in your room get a sea view

Ok it's been four days since I spent a week at Algarve Casino and been debating in my head how many stars to give. First off I'll say this is not a five star hotel. Here is my experience. When first arriving at hotel we went straight to reception as you do to check in. Gentleman at the time looked me up and down and said what name, no greeting or anything else. Gave him my last name he did his thing then asked for passports which is common then he asked for credit card which I am use to growing up in North America but never in Europe have I been asked. So I gave him a MasterCard but left me feeling a bit judged baring in mind we my gf and I was both wearing our travelling clothes and are both quite tattooed but left me feeling judge right from start. He then said our room number and where it was and basically it was in the farthest area you could be. Plus it was down these spiral stairs and no lift to this area which I believe a lot of staff stay in those rooms. No where near main hotel. As we had a large stroller and car seat with us this was going to be an issue. Once again we felt we got put all way out their because we have a baby with us even though he is very content and never cries. The receptionist said we are fully booked and nothing we could do but tomorrow maybe not and we could possibly change rooms. Who wants to go into a room unpack and try and haggle with staff to change rooms for the next few days. NOT US!, better things to do. I have put a picture of how far away from main hotel we were up also stair case. Now came the even funnier bit, we got up for breakfast the next morning got to the stair well and I carried our child up the stairs with stroller and car seat together which was just easier and safer for me to do. Once up in lobby we then discovered we had to go down a floor to breakfast so no issues because of the elevators right. WRONG every time we pressed a button people from every other floor was going to breakfast so impossible to get into elevator with stroller so carried him down the stairs to the breakfast area. Also in full view of lobby staff and reception and no offer is any help. Breakfast for a five star hotel was lacking. I have never stayed in a five star hotel where you have to ask for a fried egg or have no omelette bar and was very cramped and dated. Everyone was running into each other, always searching for a teaspoon to mix your coffee or tea. Breakfast was just plain and boring and same every day. Our room had absolutely nothing in it so we had to ask for a kettle for sterile water with having a two month old and we did manage to get one. No iron or coffee maker just mini bar but we do not drink except for odd one.

Ok so that was my experience so far but not all was bad:

Cons: Hotel is dated and needs upgrading.
2. Breakfast was terrible, needs more selection, needs omelette bar, better juice, better quality food
3. Kids pool not heated like adult pool
4. No elevator to other wing
5. Smoke smell from casino, not nice if your a non smoker
6. Hotel room dated and desperately need upgrading especially the bathroom. 5 star we usually get double walk in shower and double soaker tub, also there was no space to move around.
7. No iron, no kettle, no coffee maker

Pros 1. Adult pool is very nice for a swim and was always sun beds(For September)
2. Cleaning staff were 100%, always spot on, always asking if needed anything, can't complain one bit as the ladies work hard.
3. View from room despite being miles away from hotel was top notch
4. Free safe is good.
5. Lobby bar has a excellent view and the gentleman which was their everyday was also very good and top notch.

All in all with my experiences along with other things in hotel I could not give it anything close to five stars.

I would recommend to anyone staying in this area that Hotel Jupiter and Hotel Praia da Rocha are better for both experience and money. Everyone talks about location but these two hotels are in a better location. Both hotels sit right across from main ramp and stairs down to beach. They also both sit on what I call half way line of the strip. You can google map it yourself and see. Also they both have better ratings and from personal experience never had issues with lifts, much nicer breakfast, more modern and spacious and so on. No need to pay extra for this five star because of a Casino which you can walk 30 metres to go to anyways.
