We spent Christmas at Vila Vita and everything was superb. We have stayed twice before but not for seven years, so we knew that we were going to have a good time. However, everything exceeded our expectations and this was mainly due to the fantastic team of staff across all areas of the hotel. The rooms are spacious with everything that you would need and a lovely larger than average balcony. Being out of season, some restaurants and bars were understandably closed however the food at Bela Vita (main restaurant) and Adega (Portugese restaurant) was excellent quality and the service outstanding. We tried the hotel's Arte Nautica restaurant which is not something we had done before. It is situated right on the beach the other side of the town and the hotel will happily arrange a free transfer and pickup for you. It is well worth a visit - stunning location (even in the dark but must be fab in the summer!) great decor inside, great staff as always and great simple food well cooked. We also ate in the Ocean restaurant which has now been awarded it's second Michelin star and the whole experience was one which we will never forget. We had our Christmas lunch in the Atlantico restaurant looking out to sea - amazing. You may be aware that the hotel has it's own farm and vineyard in the north of Portugal and here they can supply their own wine and some of their meat and vegetables. What a fantastic thing to do and we can definitely recommend the red and white house wine Herdade dos Grous which is excellent value for such a high quality wine. If you are thinking of staying at Vila Vita Parc for any occasion, I would thoroughly recommend it.

A beautiful retreat from the real world to luxury resort that feels like your own home in the Algarve. Service, presentation, food, facilities such as the health club and rooms are all superb. The staff deserve a special mention for their courteous and smiling service that feels genuine, not of the American "have a nice day" variety.

A 3-night stay at Vila Vita was the "dessert" part of our 2-week trip to Portugal, and it served that role perfectly. The property's tasteful landscaping and natural contours artfully obscure the relative vastness of the place, and make it easy to feel removed from the other guests while exploring the property. In fact, our only suggestion to the hotel would be to improve the signage, as it can be hard finding your way around.

The staff is well trained and friendly, and Francisco at guest services was particularly helpful. The Michelin-starred restaurant is expensive, but definitely worth it, in terms of both the cuisine and the view. An advance reservation for a balcony table is probably necessary. There are quite a few restaurants to chose among, varying in style; we were favorably impressed by all of the ones we went to.

A shuttle bus runs between the hotel and its off-site beach area. Personally, we preferred the small beach that was right on the property, which is bordered by dramatic cliffs and seemed less commercial than the off-site beach (although the latter provides a far better opportunity for walking).

Vila Vita was one of our two very favorite spots in Portugal (the other being Romaneira in the Douro Valley), and indeed ranks among the top places we've been to anywhere. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to include some luxurious R&R in their Portugal itinerary.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the newly renovated suites near the putting green, which have the advantage of b...

Undoubtedly the best place on the Algarve and one of the best resorts within a three hour flight of the UK.

Upsides include massive, manicured, lush and interestingly planted grounds alongside beautiful, solid and spacious buildings and public areas, a decent almost private beach, a heated indoor pool (not that common in Portugal) and a great breakfast which is served in several locations to avoid the 8.00am bunfight.

Downsides are that some of the accommodation is a little tired and a long way from the main hotel or beach - some of the the Oasis Parc section falls into this category, with old TVs, limited channels and the views aren't great either. The Residence section, overlooking the sea, is much better, but kids are not allowed. To be honest, the main hotel rooms are modernised, with much better views and two together are cheaper than a Parc suite. The flats are also to be avoided - they are very ordinary and outside the main grounds.

Although there was plenty of pool space when we were there, we have heard it gets crowded during main holidays and the outside pools are small and not-heated.

They also try and lock you into eating in the complex, but the restaurants are a bit of a performance and very expensive for what they are - the full board main restaurant is also mediocre and slow. Best to go for B&B and eat locally - plenty of decent Portuguese restaurants within a 10-15 minute walk if you don't have a car.

Prices are also fairly high, though there are some good low season deals. In general, service is excellent, though not perfect. We notified the hotel we would be arriving at 2.00pm and check in is at 3.00pm - but our room wasn't ready until 4.00pm and we were kept waiting with two hot kids. We also didn't get hot water on one occasion - not great for an expensive 5*.

Internet is free though, if a little clunky - still, a welcome change from rapacious hotel wifi charges - and there's an excellent kid's play area and very well-run kids zone where you can leave over 5s for free.

All in all, with its downsides, Vila Vita is a great place.

Room Tip: Go for the Residence section with sea views if you can - otherwise main hotel rooms are cheaper and...
