We rented a studio apartment which was on the ground floor and hence we had a terrace which are all at the rear of the building which got the sun all morning until just after lunchtime. The studio was quite spacious with a large wardrobe, generous sized bed (although the frame creaks quite a bit) and a good fridge freezer in the kitchen - an essential when self-catering. Anthony was a great host and when we looked for some extra pillows they were delivered the next day. We are used to a large shower at home and found the shower enclosure quite small - with a little tweaking when the bathroom was being designed it could have been better. We were there 10 days in the middle of June, so initially the apartments were not all full, this suited us as it meant the place was quiet and we could do what we enjoy most - lay by the pool with a good book, or listen to home radio on the wi-fi which we found very good. The adjacent open air church provided great entertainment with weddings every few days. We loved the peace and quiet of this accommodation with just the church bells chiming each quarter hour to remind us we were in Italy. The pool although unheated was still quite pleasant to swim in. As we were early in the season the Lido constructed adjacent to the Santa Tecla Village harbour was not yet open. This would be the best place to access the sea if you want to swim there.
The village itself was small and a little dissappointing in resources. There was a small supermarket (Deco), a bakery and a few restaurants which were either seafood or pizza places. The streets are narrow and there are no paths to walk on from the apartment into Santa Tecla - and Italian drivers take no prisoners. For those serious self caterers there is a large supermarket in Acrieale in the Cyclops shopping centre - this may be a welcome break from the hot midday sun as unlike Deco in the village it is open all day until 9pm. The road to Acrieale is a narrow road with some hairpin bends on it - drive carefully. There are some nice villages in the area if you wish to have a day out alternatively a trip to Etna which is clearly visible (clouds permitting) from the apartments.
We were given fresh towels and bed linen after 3 days and maybe erroneously thought we would get a second change 3 or 4 days later but that was the only fresh sheets/towels that we got. I'm sure we would have been given some if we had asked.
