Since the year 2000, I've been at this resort each winter for periods of 2 weeks. The last 2 years were poor not to say the least. This resort rated 4 stars meets barely the criterias of a 3 stars. The infrastructure is on a terrible decline. Severe cuts on the number of employees resulted in poor maintenance of the entire resort. Some days, the place was overbooked with conventions and weekend visitors, I've seen 8 to 10 peoples in the same room. The cleaning crew could not keep up with such an affluence and often they skip the cleaning of mirors, bathtub, toilet. The bathrooms are dirty, falling apart, the plumbing is a mess, musty ceramics joints, old bath tubs. The room was infested with ants ( bath room, bed, night table and desk.
The dining room had to close some nights due to the over affluence of people and people had to wait outside before the ones inside left. Many tourists from Canada were sick ( Tourista ) and needed doctor's assistance. This resort is definitely not a resort for vacation anymore, this resort is specialysing in conventions and other weekend visitors to make $ rapidely. For the last 10 years, there has been a shortage of Transat at the pool and at ocean front, the ones left are very dirthy with birds droppings wich in my 2 weeks stay were never cleaned once. One day, there were winds of 50 to 70 KM/h and tiles from the roof fell on the grass near sidewalk and road. The quality of the roads is equal to our roads in Quebec.
The only good thing in this resort is the employees doing every possible thing within their means to keep you happy. The Chef has improove the taste of foos by one notch at the only restaurant of the resort.
My best regards to the employees of the Barcelo and a BIG ZERO for the administration people of this resort who could not care less for their longtime visitors from Canada.
P.S. Thanks to Dr. Menha for the excellent services provided. Quebec's doctors and our health care systems should copy the Nicaragua systems.

The front desk staff struggles with English and this made it very difficult to explain that what we had reserved and what they were giving us were two different things. The hotel and the amenities are getting old and need some updating. The staff in the restaurants were excellent and the food on the Buffet was some of the best that I have had at large resorts. The setting is absolutely beautiful. The pool staff and the leisure activity people seem to think that they are a cut above everyone else and have no concept of customer service. Housekeeping did a very nice job.

Room Tip: The seaview suites are nice but highly overpriced.

This all-inclusive resort on Montelimar Beach is, like many all-inclusives, a mixed bag.
The cabanas which are strewn throughout the multi-acre property are serviced by a “train” (a tractor-pulled cart) which supposedly runs on a 15-minute schedule but seems more regular in the evenings than at other times.
There is always plenty of food to eat at the buffet (Oceano Restaurant) if you don’t mind lining up. The lines became a bit of a nuisance when the charter flights disgorge another load of tourists whose heaping plates and endless “copas de vino” seem to suggest that their owners either haven’t eaten or drunk in weeks or are stubbornly intent on “getting their money’s worth”. This hotel also offers weekend specials and other discounts which plug the pool, bars and restaurant. Whilst it’s nice to see everyone enjoying themselves one can’t help feeling a little put out that you (who are paying the full fee of at least $150 a day) can’t get a pool chair or a table at the restaurant because someone whose paying half what you did, is sitting there!
There is one “a la carte” restaurant that needs to be booked in advance (you get the privilege of dining there one night for every three days at the resort) but we were informed that we would have to wait several days because (you guessed it) the restaurant was fully booked by guests from a charter flight!
Full marks go to the attentive restaurant and bar staff who remain cheerful and courteous despite the lack of tips one would expect in a normal restaurant. We noticed that a few, very few, patrons left tips despite the high quality of service.
The beach is grey sand and not ideal for swimming (rip tides) but great for walking at low tide. The pool is large and has too few lounge chairs for the number of guests, on average. The food as mentioned is bountiful but usually over-salted and over spiced. (You won’t get a decent slice of bread, even in the a la carte restaurant.)
The cabanas are modest and a little shop-worn. Many of the guests (mostly French Canadians on a charter holiday) to whom we talked said they enjoyed their stay and would return. Personally, we didn’t find it matched our expectations but, to be fair, we are not overly-fond of the all-inclusive vacation lifestyle.

Room Tip: Cabanas in the 100 block are closer to pool and restaurant.

Having just returned home from a 30 day trip and adventure to Granada, Corn Island, San Juan del Sur, Leon and Montelimar Nicaragua, my wife and I had a wonderful experience of this country and its people. No matter what occurred we would not have wanted to miss any part of it.

Our flight from Toronto was booked by me on Air Canada to Miami and then onto Managua by TACA, the flight was smooth and got us in on time.

All of our accommodations, local land transfers and flight to Corn Islands between 5 locations were handled by a very professional local Managua/Granada travel outfit, MP Travel Agency.

Our last destination for 5 days was the all inclusive Barceló Montelimar Resort on the Pacific coast of Nicaragua. The drive from Leon was long and scenic with different landscape throughout, however, once approaching Montelimar and the long tree lined road to the resort, our expectations rose and were not altered for the remaining days.

The Barceló Montelimar is a first class hotel, exquisite large tropical gardens with many walkways among the beach bungalows, long stretch of medium dark clean sand beach, a large main pool and sport facilities. Our room in the beach bungalow was large with a king size bed, lots of storage space, TV, AC and a full bathroom with tub. The daily maid service was efficient and prompt.

The single one buffet restaurant serving all the 293 room resort was large but did run into overload during lunch on the weekend and had to be closed for a short time. Weekends are the busiest when the people from Managua spend some time here, otherwise during the week; it is a few mixed tourists from around the world and a plane charter from Quebec Canada. None of the areas of the resort were ever crowded, even places could be found for solitude. Safety and security was never in question, staff always around and looking out for the guests.

The snack bar served delicious food, beer plentiful and of course all basic rum based drinks, however, after 7 PM there were no bars open in the main hotel area, one would have to hike up to the disco or casino for a drink. This definitely is not conductive of a five star hotel and the literature outlining hotel services, features and costs are way out of date and need to be updated. The Bar Carey states beverages from 10 AM to 10 PM, but was closed much earlier around 6 to 7 PM.

The A la Carte restaurant was a nice feature and offered an alterative to the buffet dinner, however again, the service consistency between guest was interesting, some got bread and/or butter, no mention of self serve salad bar was made, had to ask, forgot who ordered what. A little more staff training would help.

The staff was helpful, friendly, work very hard and long hours and did their best to understand our limited Spanish.

A wonderful hotel resort complex, maybe not a 5 star but at least a 4 for this area and it sure was a great way to end our 30 day Nicaragua adventure. We shall return one day.

The other locations, Granada and Hotel Granada, San Juan del Sur and the Inn on the Pacific, Leon and Hotel Los Balcones and the Corn Island Paraiso Resort are covered under each of their own reviews.

Room Tip: The 100 block of bungalows were closest to the main pool and restaurant, or hotel room block 600, all others are further away from main area AND more quiet

The property was clean and well-kept. I often saw maintenance crews painting, sweeping, etc to keep the place updated. The resort is all-inclusive, but leaves out horseback riding, 4-wheeling, and biking as those will all cost extra. The buffet was below average with many items being overcooked or bland.
