Mackenzie Sheep Dog Statue
Reviewed 5 May 2018

This statue is for the first sheepdog which helped the first settler to graze sheep. It is very easy to find since it is right in front of the car park.

Even though our main reason to Lake Tekapo was to visit the amazing Church of the Good Shepherd, seeing this Sheep Dog Statue was a bonus. These dogs are such an asset.

It's just another statue. It is good that it is located close to the Church of the Good Shepherd so visitors to the church can also visit it. Otherwise, it wouldn't really draw that much tourists. The statue is a tribute to all working dogs in the area.

We visited Lake Tekapo in the shoulder-season (April) and were surprised by the coach-loads of people who were arriving at the Church of the Good Shepard and sheep dog statue.
We were staying close by, so went down several times, but each time there was a large group of people in front of the statue and climbing in front of it, often staying for long periods of time so that we couldn't get close or get a photo easily.
Beautiful surroundings though, so if you can get through the crowds, worth a look!

This statue is very close to the iconic Church of the Good Shepherd at Lake Tekapo. It is a monument to all the hardy sheep farmers who worked along the lake. Probably not worth a special trip but its proximity to the Church of The Good Shepherd makes it easy to see and helps you appreciate the local history.
