Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for one night while travelling around new zealand. We have stayed in different hostels throughout our trip and we were appalled to find that the hostel didn't supply towels or hairdryers..All the other hostels we stayed in had towels in our bedrooms which I feel is just common sense, what place doesn't supply towels!!!! Another thing that is wrong with this hostel is they have two cats which climb about the lounge area and climb on the tables that you eat off!!!!
Nice location though and good heaters in the bedrooms...

I'm quite surprised to see all the negative reviews, as this was our favorite of several hostels we stayed at on the South Island. Yes, the rooms are small, it's very basic accommodation, and can get loud - but it's a hostel, for the price you pay you really can't expect luxury. The common room was on the small side, but it was a comfortable spot to relax, and facilitated interaction with other guests. It was a cold night and the management had an enormous room heater going in this space, which made it very cozy. Our room heater was on a one hour timer (which we've found to be very standard in this part of NZ) but warmed up the room quickly. We also liked the way the room opened directly to the outside, which made it seem larger. My only complaints would be that the staff we encountered were very taciturn and seemed the type who didn't want to be bothered with guest concerns (though we didn't have any), and that the kitchen is small, which causes people to get in each other's way during times of heavy use.

Although when we first arrived this hostel seemed ideally situated and quite bright and sunny, closer inspection said otherwise! The main memory we have is how awful the staff were. The main man seemed literally to be a mute, with the other staff close behind. Don't try to get any advice out of these guys!!
We were put in room 9 - DO NOT SLEEP HERE IF YOU GET THIS ROOM!! Though I imagine the others are all the same, I don't think they should even have sold room 9. We had the worst 2 night's sleep. People crashing about, able to hear the lounge and kitchen too well, generally terrible! When I tried to nicely offer this information to the mute on front desk he told me it must have been the kids staying there and would accept no fault on behalf of the hostel. In fact he just looked at me plain weird. Truth is, the kids were in bed by 10pm, it was everybody else and the paper thin walls that were the problem!
Problem is, we can't fault the pretty location....

We had a double room which was a nice size, heaters are fab and room was lovely and warm which is needed in winter in Lake Tekapo its freezing! Views of lake are gorgeous, great location to alpine springs and winter park. Massive bathrooms very clean, nice clean room, common area has lots of sofas but is also reception and cooking area but this was fine! No complaints and one of the nicest places we stayed on our NZ travels
