“Contactless card charges!”
Review of Angelfish Cafe

Lovely spot, but why do they insist on charging a fee for contactless credit card payments below £5? The whole point of them is that they are designed for small payments.

They are the only establishment I know that still makes such a surcharge. I understood it with debit cards, as the banks charged a flat fee, but credit cards charge a percentage, so it doesn't matter to them what the amount is...

Anyway, have stopped going there, as it's a pain to have to carry cash when out on the bike.

The visitors who attend this area normally have come to borrow a boat or cycle, on which to travel the canal. The Angelfish Cafe is the only facility to provide food and drink, within a short walking distance of the canal.
We found our toasted teacakes and the latte coffee acceptable, and a bit expensive for the quality. However there is only limited space, and the staff all seemed to be working hard, but its not fine dining!
In my opinion you come to this area for the marvellous views, the boating, cycling and walking not to go solely to the Angelfish. It therefore provides a service that I was more than happy to pay for (especially the lemon drizzle cake).

Went here out of convince more than anything, but would avoid going again in the future. Spent £8 on a burger which was small, greasy and just a bit gross. The narrowboat sandwich had Luke warm sautéed onions and cold steak in soggy bread, which again, was covered in greased. The staff were friendly enough though, so I'm guessing that this place is just there to rip off tourists who have no idea where else there is to eat in the area.

The cafe took a little finding, the path from the Dundas Wharf heads off to the left of the lift bridge over the short stub of the canal which leads to the old canal basin. We were too late for lunch so had tea and coffee and I had a slice of gluten fee coffee and walnut cake which was nice. It is a nice relaxed spot, we sat outside and fed the ducks. There is plenty of old canal archaeology to see here and also a room with a small display about the history of the Somerset Coal Canal. It was a handy stop off while cruising along the Kennet and Avon Canal.

I'm not known for taking the effort to review many places, but this place takes advantage of the lack of competition, by charging outrageous prices for nothing special. The £3.30 milk shakes 'made with ice cream' are predominantly flavoured with cheap flavoured syrup (didn't know cafes still used this stuff), and at 2.30pm on a Sunday during the summer holidays there was no hot food available. Lots of hungry punters had to settle for a packet of crisps and, in our case, an out of date pre-packed ice cream.

We will not be returning to the Angelfish Cafe.
