We found this place just by chance, walking around the narrow streets of Pienza to avoid the main road. The site is very small, with max 15 seats, so booking is strongly recommended - It is one of the few sites open all day long, with no break and that's important to know. It has a very friendly environment with Antonio and GABRIELLA (the cook) welcoming the visitors - The food is genuine, and very traditional including platters of ham and cheese, several soups and pastas and a series of Pecorino Fondutas with truffles, mushrooms, ....

We had to chance to find a seat without any reservation, but we were simply lucky - We decided for a Ribollita soup (delicious with olive oil and pepper), a Farro soup with mushrooms (very tasty and warm), and a selection of pecorino cheese .... but the fonduta from our table's neighbors was indeed gorgeous ... we could not skip the 'Vin Santo with cantucci' made by the owner (delicious!) as well as a good coffee with sweets! Strongly recommended for visitors in Pienza who want to taste a genuine Tuscany's food and welcome -

My husband and I️ went to Pienza to ship some of their olive oil home (we were told by locals in Montalcino that Pienza is the place to get the best olive oil!) We wanted to get a bite to eat and read about La Buca di Enea on a “best of” list. It’s a cute, little restaurant that serves DELICIOUS, FRESH, HANDMADE pasta!! My husband and I️ had the ravioli and it was phenomenal! The owner kindly offered us a taste of his homemade limoncello, that he unfortunately does not sell, because it was so, so good! This little restaurant is a must if you happen to be traveling through Pienza!

No it´s not that horrible! But we have to give it a one star to even up with all fantastic reviews - here´s the story: on our recent Tuscany trip we often followed TripAdvisor reviews and fared pretty well. From this aspect La Buca di Enea was a disappointment.
The place is small which does not disturb, well the decoration is a subjective perception and we did not like it that much and the smell of sheep cheese is often to find in the town and a bit more intense in this place.
The service (better said no service) is on the edge of rude (why do I have to serve you when I could browse on my tablet!).
The food - usually what we come for: you cannot expect a one man show restaurant to cook fresh - especially not with a medium sized menu. So the foods were sort of precooked warmed up too oily and definitely to salty - as said before - this was disappointing especially given almost 2k great reviews.
Bottom line: if you do not mind the feel of eating leftovers and you are in search of calorie intake before most places open for dinner - you found the right place. If you expect some service and freshly made gourmet dishes - definitely avoid.

We wondered around Pienza at that awkward time when most places were no longer open for lunch and we had passed La Buca on our way in looking for another place. So we circled back and asked if we could still have lunch. The owner seemed a bit gruff at first, but we agreed he seemed to warm up once we ordered a few local specialties.

We heard Pienza was known for Pecorino, so we decided the bruschetta with pecorino and truffles to start. I went with pici and duck ragu. My sister went paprdelle and wild boar I believe. We each had a glass of vino nobile, not sure which, my sister is the wine expert I let her order. Everything was delicious. I stepped outside to confirm a lunch we were having in Modena the next day and the bruschetta was waiting when I got back. It was huge, and the melted cheese with the truffle was perfect. Then when it was time for pasta, (isn't it always time for pasta?) It was a very sizeable portion and the ragu was perfect, the pici was thicker than what we had in Montepulciano, but still delicious.

We were too full for dessert, but the owner dropped bottles of limoncello and amaro on our table with shot glasses for us to try. We went with the limoncello. All in all, a wonderful find!
