This was a surprise, suggested by another inn that was full. It was wonderful. We stayed in 8 lodgings and this was the highlight.

We stayed four nights here and wish it had been more. The beauty, the peace and quiet, the fabulous food, the wonderful Ornella, all made our stay unforgettable.

I booked Sant' Anna after reading about it on Trip Advisor. My husband is a big fan of 'The English Patient', which was filmed at the former monastery.

The reality surpassed our expectations and the film thing really became an also-ran. Sant' Anna has a peacefulness and simplicity which gets into your soul, the minimalistic rooms (bed, bedside tables, lamp, table, wardrobe - all in keeping with the setting) reminding you that there is really no need for constant tv, internet access etc. Situated on a hilltop, the monastery has stunning views over the surrounding countryside, as well as a well-tended, sunny courtyard filled with citrus trees, where we collapsed with books and chilled out for our first afternoon. A Swiss choir was on a rehearsal retreat at the same time and their wonderful, traditional religious songs echoing through the building only added to the fantastic atmosphere.

We had originally agreed to eat there on the first night but ended up eating there all three nights - the food was fantastic - the best of Tuscan - and waswashed down with their own Montepulciano which was an excellent blend of light flinty earth and violets - all for E20 /head. The breakfasts were simple and continental in style, with plenty dairy items.

With a car, we had quick and easy access to Pienza nearby, and Montepulciano and other nearby towns. There were also a couple of lovely running routes from the monastery for our morning runs, and also a waymarked hillwalking/mountain biking route.

Ornella and Stefano were wonderful, relaxed and welcoming hosts. Sant' Anna is an Agriturisimo, not a hotel, and if you intend to stay around during the day, you might want to take a kettle and/or a few provisions.

The only small challenge we had was paying the deposit - after my credit card was cloned I was not prepared to fax its details from the very open fax at work - that left the only other option being a pretty expensive SWIFT fee. The ability to use PayPal or another online payment system would have made this much easier.

We arrived in Siena the night after leaving Sant'Anna, into a bland international hotel with horrific parking problems, and we both felt bereft - we wish we'd stayed longer. We're already planning our next trip back ...
