This tour, which is in French (our tourguide spoke in clear French that I could understand), is a must for fans of Marcel Pagnol. You are taken to Marcel Pagnol's birthplace and grave, the village and fountain that inspired his novels "Jean de Florette" and "Manon of the Spring," and the rugged garrigue hills outside Marseille that defined his childhood summers, as well as his childhood memoirs, "My Father's Glory/My Mother's Castle". You also get to visit the "Petit Monde de Marcel Pagnol" in Aubagne, among other sites. Anyone who is a fan of these four books (and the great movies made from them) will love this tour. This particular tour that we went on only operates on the last Sunday of the month (so book ahead), and lasts all day. We ate outside under some trees, so remember to bring a lunch. The tour will show you a part of Provence that is outside the wineries/Roman ruin tourist route, but that is every bit as Provencal. Most of the tour is a hike through the garrigue (including landscape from the "My Father's Glory" movies - the Tete Rouge, the hunting scenes, etc.), with the tourguide recounting Pagnol's childhood in these hills, as well as tales from his filming in this outdoor setting (novel at the time). You will feel as though you are the young Marcel traipsing through his beloved "collines" with his little brother Paul and his friend Lili, with Vladimir Cosma's lovely score from "My Father's Glory" going through your head. Again, a must for Pagnol fans.
