Before we booked this hotel, we knew it was going to be basic and for the price of about 50 dollars a night, you can't really go wrong. As mentioned in a previous review, there is not much out there. The room was okay, not very clean (dustbunny's and cobwebs), but the bathroom was a good size and the shower was good. The best things about this hotel are the location, with stunning views of the valley and the Nicoya Gulf, and the very friendly owner, Vitalis. He was very helpful in giving directions and information about the area and he served a pretty decent breakfast in the mornings.
We were lucky that the weather was beautiful when we were there, so late in the afternoon, a few guests hung out on the porch in front of the rooms to socialize and exchange travel tips, which was great way to past the time, as there are no TV's in the rooms and the wifi was down. I can recommend this hotel if you're on a budget and have a busy schedule for your stay in the Monteverde area!

Our stay at this hotel was definetly nothing to rave about, it was average, the room was somewhat clean, the hot shower did work, the included breakfast was average. The view is spectacular, no one can ever take that from this location. There are NO amenities here at all, so we were disappointed that when arriving from our afternoon adventure that the common area was closed up and we could not have the opportunity to mingle with other guests. So we would advise that if you intend to seclude yourself in a room with a book and your imagination, this is the place for you. If not, go into town!!

Room Tip: Go into town..

The Sunset was a hard one to pick a final rating for, as it had a variety of ups and downs. It wasn't spectacular but it had charm and I could see myself going back, so rated a 4.

Positive:

-Location/view is fantastic (but at the top of a big hill might be difficult to walk to town for some)
-Rooms are respectable
-Free Wi-fi provided (although doesn't reach into rooms)
-Breakfast is provided (good, but the same every day)
-Price is good
-Access to private jungle trails are worth exploring!
-Service is very friendly, willing to accommodate problems
-Good amount of shelving/storage in rooms

Negative:

-Cleaning and towel service can be lacking
-Walls are thin, can hear next rooms conversations
-Management is only available during the day, if there are any problems

Tip: If there are two people request an extra pillow each. They are thin and provide little neck support

Room Tip: Rooms have thin walls, try to pick one on the edges of the building to cut down hearing neighbours.

I am a Senior traveling alone and Sunset Hotel was perfect for me. It was quiet, away from the bustle of Santa Elena. The room is constructed with different types of wood and applied in a wainscoating design. The bathroom is large and tiled. The owner and his son were very accomodating for tour suggestions. The reception/dining area is charming with about seven tables for breakfast. The guests are friendly with each other in such a cozy setting. The setting of the hotel is peaceful with a beautiful panorama out to the Nicoya Gulf. The birding around the property is very good. It was chilly in the room at night sleeping as the linen is sparse. I slept in my fleece jacket. I would definitely go back.

Stayed 2 night in the Sunset hotel. Got a small discount so paid 45 dollars pr night including breakfast. The rooms are simple and so is the breakfast, but ok value for the price. We didn't find the rooms so clean, but the owner is really nice, firiendly and helpful and all in all we liked the stay. The hotel is a bit out of town, but during daytime you can easily do the 15-20min walk and in the evening it is very easy to get a taxi (which is 3 dollars each way). The breakfast doesn't start before 7:30 which is late for Costa Rica where a lot of trips starts at 6 am. However the owner is nice and will make breakfast untill 12:00 if you ask for it...so buy a couple of bananas if you are going on a early trip and have breakfast when you come back. You can't have lunch or dinner at the hotel so you either have to use one of the places nearby (5-10 min walk) or one in Santa Elena (15-20min walk).
