This hotel is a surreal idea gone bad. Parts of hotel are outlandish ...parts are in crumbling state . Maintenance issues abound. It has a 320 to 360 degrees open bathroom with mirrors reflecting all of your anatomy to various areas including your near and dear and beyond.the staff and manager are helpful and doing their best but the housekeeping and infrastructure is sadly way behind. Sorry can't recommend...as someone once famously said...if u r going to fail ...then fail fast to reduce pain and recover gain

This hotel has very different rooms with god view. We stayed in a room with attached pool. it was really a very different experience for us. The pools seemed quite clean too. This really worked well with us as there was scorching heat outside.

As this room was in ground floor we had to keep the doors always closed when inside lest the tropical insects get in. The mosquitoes were also bothering. Bit I guess that's the entire bit about the experience.

But we did not like the set buffet of this place. The food was cooked fresh.. but there was something about the taste and portion that was a bit put off.

The breakfast buffet was limited may be because the hotel had fewer guests.

This hotel has buses ferrying people from the hotel to the beach at 930-1030am in the morning and 530-630pm in the evening. The taxis are available for Rs 200 otherwise. the walk can be an uphill task otherwise (literally).

I would suggest this hotel to stay definitely if you want a secluded vacation but do not opt for the meals plan.

We stayed at Villa Thawthisa for 5 nights at the end of our visit to Sri Lanka.

I’ll start by saying we had come from an amazing hotel in Mirissa so our expectations were high.

The front desk staff are fantastic, so pleasant and friendly and extremely helpful. Their customer service was brilliant.

The hotel itself does look a little tired compared to images on Booking.com.

We were disappointed with our first room due to a leaking shower and being generally a bit shabby. The staff were very understanding and moved us to the room next door which was much better. We stayed in a classic double, i would recommend staying in the next room up, as these did look much nicer. Our room was clean with fresh towels and water provided everyday however they are basic and a looking little tired.

The pool areas are lovely, they are cleaned everyday. Fantastic view especially at sunset!

Breakfast was brilliant, lovely staff and a wide choice of foods available including freshly cooked omelettes and pancakes. Also a great view!

We booked this hotel on the premise that it had a gym, however most of the equipment was either too rusty to function or just broken. We also got eaten alive by mosquito’s and there isn’t any AC so the windows are kept wide open.

We used the airport drop off service which was fantastic and well worth the 90 USD. Our driver arrived in a comfortable hybrid with comfy seats that recline all the way back. He arrived at 4.30am sharp and helped us with our luggage. AC in vehicle too which was a bonus.

Overall a mixed bag of great experiences and a little disappointment.

First of all, I want to make it clear that several of the staff members here were great - the restaurant staff and some of the receptionists were great and tried as best they could - given the resources they had at their disposal. They’re just let down by their management.

We opted for the deluxe room with private pool. After a few days at cheaper hotels in towns like Ella and Kandy, we decided we wanted to splash out a little (£100 per night per room). As soon as you get to the hotel you can see what they’re trying to do. A boutique polished concrete hotel at the top of a hill (10 min walk to town). Greeted in the typical way, cold towel, fresh juice - great. Before we’d even seen our room we were asked to pay upfront the full amount, this is pretty unusual in itself which made me think are they used to people leaving?

We first checked into room 102. Straight away you could see the dirt on the floors, ceiling, walls. The windows haven’t been cleaned in what seems years and there were cobwebs everywhere. The wardrobe doors were half hanging off and there were hairs from the previous stayers on the sheets and floors. We went to look at the pool in our room, and it was filthy. Things on the bottom and floating, which had they’d of cleaned, they wouldn’t have been there.

We immediately asked to change rooms and to be fair to the hotel - they put us in the only other room with the private pool, room 101. This room was a similar but smaller version. Straight away we noticed it was a little cleaner, but far from the standard you’d expect of a hotel charging £100pn. We reluctantly stayed in the room and thought “just bare with it” as we didn’t really want to make a fuss. However, as it got dark, we were in for a bit of a shock. The room was right outside the reception area and people were sat shouting and talking here until the early hours - fine, people are enjoying themselves - just don’t expect much sleep if people are sat in the reception areas. Also, as the hotel room door is made of opaque glass - all of the lights from the hallways comes straight into the room and kept the room light at all hours. There were also ants, spiders and lots of mosquitos in the room. One thing about this hotel is all of the bathrooms are outdoors - so if you need to go to the bathroom, you turn the light on and the toilet immediately attracts insects. Fine if you want to have that type of holiday, but again - £100 per night in a boutique hotel. Not really what you expect?

Unfortunately we had to ask for our money back for the remaining 2 nights and said we’d move hotels. They said they’d sort out rooms and moved us to a further room, V003. They claimed the room was an upgrade, but evidently it wasn’t. The room was huge, and had a huge outdoor bathroom but again - just really really unclean. There were holes in our bedsheets, Mould and damp on the walls. The electricity kept tripping midway through our outdoor showers leaving us in pitch black. Every day we asked for a refund and said we’d move, the staff kept telling us the chairman would be here this evening to facilitate- but never showed up. The cleaners had obviously felt our unhappiness as on the final night there was a strong smell of cleaning products and the bathroom did look a little better - so thanks for that.

We just put up with the final night as the chairman or manager didn’t show up again and when we checked out they had absolutely no time for us which didn’t surprise me considering they didn’t show up to talk once in the three nights.

A quite obviously important guest showed up as we were checking out (arrived with his own armed guard) and we were told to wait until he’d checked in even though we were there before him, the GM was rude and ushered us to “wait over there for your car” and didn’t even look at us whilst talking to us. Very very disappointing and was the icing on the cake for a poor stay.

The hotel has so much potential. It’s just so badly maintained, cleaned and managed. All of the bathrooms are outdoor (which we didn’t know until we got there?) with no alternative. Only one window in the rooms had a curtain also, so you’re woken up at anywhere from 6am onwards with the sunlight coming through.

Oh, and the gym.... I’ll let my photos show you that.

I don’t usually complain and I’m definitely not a typical “trip advisor”. But we stayed in other hotels in Sri Lanka for 1/3rd of the price and they were in a different league to this place.

So just be aware, don’t expect 4 star cleanliness and room here... it’s more of a 3 maybe 2. But for your money, there’s tens of nicer hotels in the area.


Good breakfast and food seemed nice.
Towels were cleaned daily
Staff did try and were very attentive and apologetic - they just had little power as everything seems to be signed off from management.
Main pool area was nice

This hotel has so much potential but overall it was a really disappointing stay.


Good location- its away from the main street and therefore nice and quiet. We had direct access to the pool from our bedroom. Aircon was good. Check in was quick and they gave us a cold drink and towel on arrival.

- the pool side was really dirty
- the room looked tired and in need of some TLC. There was old and cracked furniture. The bed set up was strange with a wooden platform leading to the bed.
- toilet and shower area was not clean and felt quite exposed being outside
- Wi-Fi was unsecured and slow, unable to watch anything on the iPad as it couldn't stream
- restaurant needs serious upgrading. The chairs are old and dirty, the interior is not at all appealing. But the views are great. That's about it.
- the whole place just felt dirty and in need of upgrading. I also suffered really bad inset bites during the night and I'm not sure whether these were bed bugs.
- breakfast was an overall disappointment. It looked like the food had been sat out for days. The choice was limited and I was told I had to pay extra for water...

The photos are really misleading. It has great potential to be amazing but on closer look it was nowhere near what we expected. Glad we only stayed for one night and couldn't be happier to move hotels.
