Review of Fethard Castle

Fethard Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: A fifteenth century castle built on the remains of a much earlier site. Following the arrival of the Anglo-Normans in Ireland in 1169, the district in which Fethard is situated was granted to a knight named Harvey de Montmorency. He, in turn, granted it to Christ Church, Canterbury, England. In 1200A.D. Canterbury ordered the construction of a castle at Fethard and a court to the north of the church, presumably on the site of the present castle.Email: hookinfo2@eircom.net

We happened upon this castle on our way home from Hook Lighthouse, and decided to stop. There is a green metal fence that goes around it, but has been broken into around back, so you could get in if you wanted to. We just took some pictures through the fence. It has some interesting architecture. Worth a stop if you are driving by but definitely not a destination on its own.

The remnants of Fethard Castle were charming. Though a traditional castle existed on the site in the 12th century, a more 'fortified posh house' was built in the 15th century. This was once occupied by the Loftus family (big name in these parts, they then moved into Loftus Hall). The castle was eventually abandoned in 1922 - and now sits like a ghost of Ireland's past on the main street of Fethard. Never quite figured out in these situations if it's the castle that's out of place or the modern small town surrounding it.

The castle itself is in a very sorry state, it is completely fenced off and all you can do is walk through the field that surrounds it. With some investment I think it has a lot of potential to be a real landmark but until then, don't make a special journey.

Fethard Castle is a ruin that is behind fences that stop tourists but unfortunately have not stopped vandalism. The Castle is great for taking pics, but that's about it. There is no information about it and it could use a good picking up around it.
