We stayed 2 nights at the Hotel Yunque Mar as part of a birding package with Birding Puerto Rico so I do not know the exact cost. I do remember looking at the prices on the back of the door and thinking they were reasonable. The rooms facing the pool were much more expensive and I really did not see why. The Hotel is located on the ocean in a residential area. There is very little sand right behind the hotel and at high tide the water is almost to the hotel steps that go down to the beach. There is a good swimming beach a mile or so down…a long walk or a short drive. The neighborhood seemed safe enough and we always went for a walk before bed. They tore down the abandoned building right next door so now there is a clean open lot…I am told it was not pretty and the hotel seemed very happy to improve their view.

Check in and out was hassle free. We had a standard room which had wifi, satellite TV, a large bed, and a balcony with a couple of chairs. The entire hotel, including our room was very clean. The hotel has a basement with a pool table and a lounging area with a bar. There is another indoor/outdoor lounging area in the back facing the ocean and this is where your free breakfast is served and where you can come get ice for your room from behind the bar. The pool looked clean and well kept and there are some lounge chairs around the pool for sunning. The area out front has a nice garden area with flowers and some chairs to sit on. There is always someone there and we were able to get some beers late one night.

The breakfast was basic but included a few choices. I had eggs and bacon one morning and a breakfast type sandwich the next…both were good. The coffee could be hotter. They do not serve other meals on a regular basis. Our guide arranged for Sandra to cook us dinner one night and it was great.

The main reason to stay here is the close proximity to the Rainforest and we took advantage of this for our birdwatching trips each morning. We were able to find many of the endemic birds of PR with the help of our guide Hilda Morales. I would highly recommend this hotel to birdwatchers or others that want quick access to the park…it could also be a nice quiet get away at a reasonable price.

This hotel has the worst service i have ever seen. We booked our stay 1 week before arrival and waited for confirmation of our reservation (which is needed before you show up) but it never came. The website tells you to fill out the form and wait for the confirmation...but the awful management never responds. Without the confirmation, we had to plan for last minute housing, only to find out when we returned that this hotel had charged us for our booking! we called the management 5 times to refund us and even sent a lot of emails for a refund...but have still not received it 1.5 months later. They have made every excuse from we sent you a confirmation email (which they still cannot "find") to we refunded your card (which 3 weeks later has not shown up on the card). Beware before you book with them...they might just ruin your trip in paradise.

When making reservations online, our site clearly states the hotels cancelation policies. When a reservation is made the rate is then held for the room that was requested by the client. We make sure on the day of arrival rooms are clean, warm and welcoming.
At times we have even extended our office hours awaiting the arrival of guests who have called saying they will be arriving late and we are more than happy to wait upon them or give them the information needed for them to retrieve the key for their room, These are only a few of the inconviences and costs as well due to clients who do not show up without making proper cancelations. After speaking over the phone, a few days after the date of arrival, and taking the situation to the hotels administration, the full amount was refunded, if the bank has not done their part then that matter should be taken up with them. Anyhow we are sorry and apologize for any inconvenience.

Our first trip to PR in Jan of '10 left me wanting MORE!! We had stayed in RIncon, the west coast and I so badly wanted to see the rainforest in the East. We had a cruise out of San Juan to NYC and only had two nights to "do" El Yunque, so I found this through TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed.
First I have to say people either get PR or they don't (in my opinion) When we arrived in Rincon last year, I was taken back by the trash and the lack of pride in home ownership. You have beautiful homes and beaches right next to homes that look like they have been part of a NATO airstrike. I still don't understand it, but I guess that's just the way it is. On our drive to Yunque Mar, we drove through such neighborhoods...but there, like a shining jewel, an oasis.....on the beach. Our host couldn't be any better. This is one thing that will take me back to PR...the people are so friendly and helpful...never met one rude person. If you are lost, they will gladly help you...not give you some look like you've bothered them. Anyhow, it's a great base location for the rainforest. The surf was pretty rough right outside the hotel, but just a short walk down toward the larger public beach it was calmer. WARNING tho...there is a lot of trash on the beaches. I saw this on the west side of PR also. It can be depressing if you are accustomed to pristine beaches... I really don't understand why....I'm not assigning blame to locals or tourist...It is a shame that there is no obvious attempts to clean them up or keep them clean.

Room Tip: I would say toward the beach would be best

We ended up at the Hotel Yunque Mar kind of by accident. For the 2nd night of our honeymoon we had planned to stay in Fajardo - but no one had rooms available unless we were willing to spend about $200 for one night!

We had just rented a beach house in Luquillo and at the other end of the street was the Hotel Yunque Mar. We called and they had a room - kind bed including breakfast for $109 a night. We knew that the neighborhood looked a little sketchy at first glance from our stay at the beach house, but we also knew that it was a perfectly safe area.

The clerk at the desk was very helpful, answering all of our questions. He showed us to our room, told us how the A/C worked, and let us know the hours for breakfast. The room was very large, and had a little balcony overlooking the pool area. The bathroom was a little outdated, but very clean and functional.

We had a good night's sleep and enjoyed a nice hot breakfast the next morning. The view from the breakfast area can't be beat - it's right at the water's edge.

The staff agreed to keep our bags after check out while we went to explore El Yunque for a couple of hours.

All in all, very friendly, clean and a great value! Oh - and the artwork throughout the hotel is pretty awesome.

Yunque Mar was recommended to us by our travel agent. We stayed at the hotel prior to us departing on a cruise from San Juan. Edgar and Sandra- the owners, went out of their way to make our stay (before and after our cruise) comfortable and relaxing. The hotel is nestled in a residential area about 30 minutes outside of San Juan near Luquillo. The hotel is right on the beach, and within walking distance to about 35 kiosk type restaurants all along the beach. Sandra and Edgar serve a breakfast every morning to their guests with a choice of ham and eggs, pancakes, coffee and orange juice. There are two beautiful suites overlooking the ocean , The next time we visit we most certainly will want to book one the two suites. The General Manager of the the hotel is William, a true gentleman who also does his best to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Down side is that there is no formal restaurant within the hotel. We were told by the owners that they were in the process of opening one in the near future. Getting around is also a problem if you don't have a car. To get to the local town of Luquillo,(about 2 miles from the hotel) you either need a car or a cab. Cabs are hard to come by, so renting a car at the airport would probably be your best bet. Local foods can be sampled at one of the 35 food kiosks located within walking distance of the hotel. A group of us that were staying at the hotel prior to our cruise ate at a different kiosk every night. The food was excellent and reasonable in price. Would definitely come back, but next time with a car rental. Keep up the good work Sandra and Edgar!!
