Our first trip to PR in Jan of '10 left me wanting MORE!! We had stayed in RIncon, the west coast and I so badly wanted to see the rainforest in the East. We had a cruise out of San Juan to NYC and only had two nights to "do" El Yunque, so I found this through TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed.
First I have to say people either get PR or they don't (in my opinion) When we arrived in Rincon last year, I was taken back by the trash and the lack of pride in home ownership. You have beautiful homes and beaches right next to homes that look like they have been part of a NATO airstrike. I still don't understand it, but I guess that's just the way it is. On our drive to Yunque Mar, we drove through such neighborhoods...but there, like a shining jewel, an oasis.....on the beach. Our host couldn't be any better. This is one thing that will take me back to PR...the people are so friendly and helpful...never met one rude person. If you are lost, they will gladly help you...not give you some look like you've bothered them. Anyhow, it's a great base location for the rainforest. The surf was pretty rough right outside the hotel, but just a short walk down toward the larger public beach it was calmer. WARNING tho...there is a lot of trash on the beaches. I saw this on the west side of PR also. It can be depressing if you are accustomed to pristine beaches... I really don't understand why....I'm not assigning blame to locals or tourist...It is a shame that there is no obvious attempts to clean them up or keep them clean.

Room Tip: I would say toward the beach would be best

We ended up at the Hotel Yunque Mar kind of by accident. For the 2nd night of our honeymoon we had planned to stay in Fajardo - but no one had rooms available unless we were willing to spend about $200 for one night!

We had just rented a beach house in Luquillo and at the other end of the street was the Hotel Yunque Mar. We called and they had a room - kind bed including breakfast for $109 a night. We knew that the neighborhood looked a little sketchy at first glance from our stay at the beach house, but we also knew that it was a perfectly safe area.

The clerk at the desk was very helpful, answering all of our questions. He showed us to our room, told us how the A/C worked, and let us know the hours for breakfast. The room was very large, and had a little balcony overlooking the pool area. The bathroom was a little outdated, but very clean and functional.

We had a good night's sleep and enjoyed a nice hot breakfast the next morning. The view from the breakfast area can't be beat - it's right at the water's edge.

The staff agreed to keep our bags after check out while we went to explore El Yunque for a couple of hours.

All in all, very friendly, clean and a great value! Oh - and the artwork throughout the hotel is pretty awesome.

Yunque Mar was recommended to us by our travel agent. We stayed at the hotel prior to us departing on a cruise from San Juan. Edgar and Sandra- the owners, went out of their way to make our stay (before and after our cruise) comfortable and relaxing. The hotel is nestled in a residential area about 30 minutes outside of San Juan near Luquillo. The hotel is right on the beach, and within walking distance to about 35 kiosk type restaurants all along the beach. Sandra and Edgar serve a breakfast every morning to their guests with a choice of ham and eggs, pancakes, coffee and orange juice. There are two beautiful suites overlooking the ocean , The next time we visit we most certainly will want to book one the two suites. The General Manager of the the hotel is William, a true gentleman who also does his best to make your stay as pleasant and comfortable as possible.
Down side is that there is no formal restaurant within the hotel. We were told by the owners that they were in the process of opening one in the near future. Getting around is also a problem if you don't have a car. To get to the local town of Luquillo,(about 2 miles from the hotel) you either need a car or a cab. Cabs are hard to come by, so renting a car at the airport would probably be your best bet. Local foods can be sampled at one of the 35 food kiosks located within walking distance of the hotel. A group of us that were staying at the hotel prior to our cruise ate at a different kiosk every night. The food was excellent and reasonable in price. Would definitely come back, but next time with a car rental. Keep up the good work Sandra and Edgar!!

Room Tip: If you can, ask for the ocean front suites.

we wanted to spend a couple of days before and after the cruise in Puerto Rico but away from San Juan. This Hotel turned out to be the perfect place to relax and spend time on the beach(es) nearby. It's a 40 Minute drive from San Juan airport, we rented a car a Thrifty which was really cheap and great for visiting the natural forest which is only a few miles away from the Hotel.

The Hotel is very nice and offers a breathtaking ocean view as it is located directly on the beach. It was so great to fall asleep with the sound of waves lapping, and the rooms were clean and spacious with a/c and an ocean-view balcony. If you're in for something fancy, this would be the wrong place, but the staff are very friendly and professional and willing to help with whatever issue should occur.

The pool was a bit disappointing, it looks far better on the pictures and the poolside showers did not work, but hey, with the ocean less than 20ft away why care for the pool?!

Room Tip: We booked online. Ask for a room on 1st floor.

If you're more interested in seeing the rainforest, sampling the Playa Luquillo kiosks, and not high maintenance, this place is more than adequate. We had a rental car; the Rainforest is about 10 min drive from the hotel. The kiosks are 2 traffic lights away, you {could} walk. BTW, #2,12, 21 are my favs. The hotel is right on the beach, they have a pool, free breakfast which is decent. Our room had a king size bed, balcony overlooking beach/pool, cable TV, and an A/C that would freeze you out! Shower had hot water with good pressure and the place was relatively clean. William, at the front desk, spoke perfect English, very pleasant, and very accommodating. If you want luxury, and wanna pay $250/night, go to El Conquistador; otherwise, Hotel Yunque Mar is nice find.
