We stayed here on our way to Cape Breton Island. Our room was delightful, large and spacious. Bed super comfortable and shower excellent.
Breakfast was very good, made and served by Sandy, the amiable host.
It was enjoyable to meet and talk to other travellers and Sandy makes sure everyone is welcomed wherever they are from.
Would recommend this guest house for sure. Perfect place to stay before you set off on the Trail.

We chose Port Hawkesbury/MacKenzie House as a starting point to Cape Breton, having taken a nice coastal drive up from Halifax. Initial impression was "Oh . . .". It is a single detached home on a court, with what appears to be inadequate parking. It appeared that no-one was home and we saw instructions for us in the foyer, but it turned out that Sandy was home, and showed us to our room and seemed friendly enough. We were told to park behind the home, on the grass - Note: be sure to leave yourself an exit route, as the parking is not organised in any way.

Room was on the northwest side, beside the driveway to the rear and had a small deck outside on a separate entrance. Room was nice, bright, clean and the bed afforded a good night's sleep. I would give the room 4 stars (****). Other rooms seemed to be nice as well.

Breakfast in the MacKenzie House, by comparison was worth 2 Stars at best (**) - just two eggs, two 'bits' of bacon and two pieces of toast. There was also cereal, juice etc but the overall feeling was underwhelming - if you are paying $140-ish I think you are entitled to expect something more. A local lady helps with the breakfast and was pleasant but rushed.

To wrap it up, MacKenzie House reminded us more of a youth hostel in Europe - it has amenities such as a washer/dryer for the dusty traveller, a communal fridge, a common area with books and magazines. Sandy was pleasant but seemingly has his mind on other things. But since it is on the gateway to the very popular Cape Breton and Cabot Trail we expected more for our tourist dollar.

The room was spacious, comfortable mattress. Location was ok, not the easiest walk to the Civic Centre but we managed.

What struck us about this place was how dirty the floors were, in the hallway and in our room. All surfaces were also covered with dust. It was like they had some long term tenants but hadn't done the deep clean needed to get it ready for us (the tenants were long term status construction folks from Ontario, we met them coming out the door, they had to be moved because the place was being inhabited by curling fans this weekend). There were dust and hair bunnies on the floor, gum balls, etc. I was so grossed out I found a dust mop in the hallway closet and swept the dirt, etc under the bed (I think there was a Kleenex under there too). It wasn't great walking around with sock feet. The bathroom was adequately cleaned, I think they might have just forgotten to get to the floors...and they were pretty gross.

Some have mentioned they didn't meet the owner on arrival...that didn't bother us, there was a note on the door telling us what to do. Breakfast was quite good (bacon/eggs, etc). The server seemed quite overwhelmed but got us all served in a timely fashion.

All in all, we probably won't be returning.

We stayed at MacKenzie House B & B after finishing the Cabot Trail drive. Sandy was there to meet us when we arrived, although he had prepared an envelope for us if he was absent. He work's around the property. He was very cordial and showed us to our rooms and filled us in on anything we needed to know about the B&B, breakfast and a good place to try for dinner. The B&B itself is not fancy, but had everything we needed and the breakfast in the morning was a nice one.
Would we stay here again? Yes
