“Stunning Engineering Masterpiece”
Review of Ribblehead Viaduct

Ribblehead viaduct is a masterpiece of Victorian engineering. Dominating the landscape of Ribblehead, to truly appreciate this structure you have to get up close and marvel that this structure was build in an era that predates modern equipment and technology.

And if you think the sight is spectacular from aside of it, get yourself up to the top of Whernside to appreciate it's beauty from a whole new viewing point. Fabulous.

On a recent trip to the Dales...one of our visits was to see the Viaduct.
We were extremely fortunate that we were there to watch the Flying Scotsman crossing this wonderful structure.... definitely made our day

Went to see this after watching the TV Drama Jerico i found it to be very moving imagining all the construction work going on particularly in the middle of winter living and working up there quite a feat of civil engineering

We went to see this magnificent construction right up in the hills on a sunny day in September. Plenty of parking and loads of easy walks. it might be ok for a larger wheeled electric chariot. Visit the station its a real time capsule. There is a holiday let there also
which has dramatic views. I would allow 2-3 hours and take wet weather gear - wrap up well in the winter. There is a pub - reviewed on here also.

Well, it's a wonderful viaduct, no doubt. Well worth visiting, but make sure you see it both close up and from a distance, and definitely make sure you visit the mini-exhibition at Ribblehead Railway Station too. The Skill lies in the beautiful symmetry of the construction and it's simplistic elegance. The Folly lies in the cost-cutting construction of the original contractors meaning extensive reconstruction was needed. Oh, and the whole point of the viaduct (to support main line services from London to Scotland) was less supported by economics, more by corporate vanity at the time. A very interesting - and worthwhile - place to visit!
