Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

On face value it seems like a smaller site however it turns out to be a really interesting and educational site. There's a good museum area as well as some quite extensive ruins of the abbey with a good audio tour. Excellent photo opportunities if it's a sunny day. Might not be as good if it's raining as there is limited cover in the actual abbey section.

We first visited many years ago on a very rainy day and always wanted to return in better weather and finally managed it. Things had moved on since our last visit with a new visitor centre and an audio tour both of which were much appreciated. We had opted to stay at English Heritage cottage on site which allowed us unlimited access to the abbey outside public opening times and it was a wonderful experience to wander round the site in isolation and at different times of day - very peaceful and atmospheric, a lovely place to visit

This is an interesting visit in beautiful surroundings. I can recommend the audio guide which was included in the entrance charge (free to members). Staff were very helpful, cheerful and courteous. The shop was well stocked and the cafe provided good tasty food at a reasonable price.

Visited fortunately on a rainy day but a very interesting place to go to. Didn't realise how important it was in Englands religious past.
Very nice coffee shop with lovely views over ruins. Well worth a visit
