Owner description: Located in the village of Helmsley, visit the Rievaulx Abbey and its two 18th-century temples, one of which is the splendid Ionic Temple with its intricate ceiling paintings and 17th-century furniture.

A level grass area on the top of a hill between 2 interesting temple like structures. The whole area has views down to Rievaulx Abbey nestling in the valley bottom.
The "temple" nearest the entrance was open the afternoon we went and a guide was explaining about its historic use as a picnic location for visitors to Duncombe Park on the edge of Helmsley. Its a pleasant level walk to the other "temple" at the other end of the grassed area.
There were a number of sculptures around the area, most were by Michael Kusz who has a workshop in Reeth and works under the name of Graculus Sculptures. Well worth calling in if in the area.

National Trust Property where you walk about a mile and get to see a nice Temple.
Great views out to the surrounding area as well as to the Rievaulx Abbey below.
Be aware that you might want to have a bite to eat in Helmsley or at the Abbey first.
Peaceful place.

I thoroughly enjoyed the visit here. Not a large property, but easy to while away the time if the weather is fine! Very friendly and helpful staff members. We started the walk in 1 of the temples before it closed and the volunteer was passionate about the history of the place and shared it with the visitors. A gently walk through some woods leads you to the terrace which has 12 different stunning views of the Abbey below. Beautiful at this time of year. There was also an exhibition of sculptures throughout the walk which made for a good talking point. Well worth a visit.

Overlooking Rievaulx Abbey we had a nice walk in the woods and grassed areas. There are a number of sculptures on view which gives the Terrace a bit of atmosphere in addition to the two "temples" on either side of the Terrace.

If you do not have children with you that would enjoy the wooded area and perhaps a picnic then your visit would not be a long one unless you too plan on a picnic and so if you are not National Trust members bear this in mind. They do not have a cafe on site so you do need to be aware of this too. They have a coffee machine in the shop which is not very exciting. The views across to the Abbey are stunning and make for good photographic opportunities
