Owner description: Located in the village of Helmsley, visit the Rievaulx Abbey and its two 18th-century temples, one of which is the splendid Ionic Temple with its intricate ceiling paintings and 17th-century furniture.

If you do not have children with you that would enjoy the wooded area and perhaps a picnic then your visit would not be a long one unless you too plan on a picnic and so if you are not National Trust members bear this in mind. They do not have a cafe on site so you do need to be aware of this too. They have a coffee machine in the shop which is not very exciting. The views across to the Abbey are stunning and make for good photographic opportunities

Our second visit of the year. Always seems very peaceful and serene here, apart from the occasional RAF flyby!
There is currently a sculpture exhibition by Michael Kusz on, with exhibits in the woods and on the terrace. This is well worth a look, very nice.

Before visiting Rievaulx Abbey visit this terrace ,walk along the edge and gaze at the aerial views of the Abbey. If the sun is out the shadows and the colours of the York stone give an additional dimension to the views. The woodland walks are peaceful and flora and fauna abundant. The only down side is the restricted visiting time to the Ionic Temple. 12.30 pm to 1.00 pm.

We enjoyed the walk through the wood and taking in the many interesting sculptures.
From the Tuscan temple walking along the top of the terrace to the Ionic temple, there are numerous views out to the moors and of the abbey. The Ionic temple is open for viewing and also has an exhibition underneath.
Very friendly and helpful staff here, toilets, limited facilities, small shop and adequate parking.

Even if you avoid the National Trust charging extra for Gift Aid and pay the basic ticket price, this is still expensive for what is a mile walk through woods (there are a few activities for children in the woods), a selection of views over Rievaulx Abbey and a couple of small temples.
There isn’t a tea room and only limited parking.
Much better to skip this altogether and spend more time at Rievaulx Abbey which, by comparison, is great value (including a free audio tour guide if you want).
