The fort was built many years ago and the history is mentioned on the monument. The condition of the fort says how old it is. One must not expect much of this place.

Leaving its history to diligent historians and the finer details to one of the excellent guides, I recommend being at this fort of Shivaji Maharaj at either sunrise or sunset, as the heat of the sun makes one weary even in winter. Owned by the descendant of Shivaji Maharaj, it has enough living place for about 30 persons who also claim descent from the followers of Shivaji Maharaj. It is only by visiting one of the major forts of Shivaji Maharaj that one begins to truly appreciate the magnitude of his life works: eradication of foreign rulers from his homeland, within the short span of his life and the extremely limited resources at his disposal. It is then, and only then, one realises the loving loyalty he must have commanded among his people. Walk barefoot here, if you can, It is a pilgrimage to the sacred.

When you come to Mahabaleshwar you should visit Pratapgad. It is the first fort built entirely by the great Maratha Emperor Shivaji. The fort is NOT AT ALL maintained but yet one gets an glimpses of its past grandeur and strength. Worth it if you have time!

Pratapgarh Fort is very famous for its build and for the famous story of Shivaji Maharaj. it is believed that here Shivaji Maharaj killed Afzal Khan very cleverly. Even you can hire guide for some knowledge or you can just search on internet ,there is every important point is expressed very well or else there are a lot of private museums which shows you the whole story of this incident of killing Afzal Khan .I went there and it has the entry fee of 15 rupees per person choice is up to you .if you wanna take guide for 200 or 300 or you can go in those private museum you can know everything about that place.that's it best place.don't ever skip this place if you are in Mahabaleshwar.there are a lot of steps so be prepared.
