Eating at the Caffe' is an ever changing experience. The wife[chef] and husband[ everything else] have a unique dinner awaiting you. The menu changes ever day and is therefore hand written. This restaurant is very small so reservations are a must. The menu changes so often because they buy fresh local ingredients. We had to go back again and again to try all the varying dishes. Great food at a very reasonable price.

In Italy, we learned, you never go for the glamour outside. Look for the hidden places to find quality.

For a gem in the Maremma, the southern part of Tuscany, go to St Angelo Scalo, in the famous Montalcino wine area ( Brunello di Montalcino) a very small village near the entrance of the famous Banfi Winery.

Between a small group of houses, hidden behind big trees there is Caffé Sant Angelo, Osteria.

It is a Caffé and the place where the locals eat, wether they are world-famous winemakers or workers in the vineyard, and everybody in between.

And that has a reason: top quality, authentic Italian simple dishes and a very kind service.

The Caffe is run by a couple you will really love; Daniela and Pino. Daniela is the chef in the kitchen, cooking for everybody with a generous and expert hand, the most tasteful non pretentious authentic food you can imagine.

And her husband Pino runs the restaurant, works in the kitchen with his wife and serves everybody in order of arriving.

And.. you cannot believe the prices to be so low. Everything is home made, all made with a lot of taste, even simple pasta dishes, with a creative touch.

The menu, daily written by hand by Pino, changes everyday, but is has a few permanent dishes. The most divine is the Tortino di Pecorino, a secret recipe, creamy, seducing, soft cheese taste on a carpaccio of pears. Yammie.

The meat on the menu: tagliata di manzo ( charcoal grilled slices of bistecca) from the famous butcher and neighbour Carlo Pieri and a variety of pasta dishes, also vegetarian. The menu is all in Italian, if you need any translation, there is always somebody who loves to explain to you every item. No english translation on the menu, after all this is Italy!

Pino and Daniela work as a team, Pino knows everything that goes on in the restaurant, but he only sees you when it is your turn. Then you get all the attention. And all the best service and dishes there are. But don't try to interfere with his system, you make chaos.

The remarkable thing about this simple Caffe is, that everybody who arrives here, just loves the place, they all seem to take part in the relaxed and enjoying atmosphere, no barriers.

About the service: very friendly, and very thorough. It can take some time; Pino and Daniela work together, and work very hard.

But the waiting can be made simple: Choose a bottle of wine from the wall, sit down, have it opened, enjoy your time and you will have the most relaxed and wonderful meal ever in Italy. And... be positively surprised by their ( low ) prices.

This is a little gem, on the road to Montalcino in a tiny town of Sant Angelo Scalo. The chef is utterly brilliant and uses local ingredients. The cheese mousse with pear and honey has to be tasted to be believed. It is the food of angels. The spaghetti with courgette and pistachio pesto was so good we travelled the next day to get it again. Everyone was absolutely thrilled with the delicious plates of food. The desserts were also outstanding including a cheesecake that was so delicate and light. We ate in the garden. The cafe inside is decorated very simply and the surroundings aren't spectacular, but if the food is this great who cares. Service was efficient and friendly. t is closed on Monday.

We were staying nearby at Castello Banfi and dropped in for dinner. When we asked for a table the owner screamed at us in Italian. I think he was trying to tell us that we needed a reservation. It was a cool night and we were willing to sit outside at 3 open tables. In addition there was an open table inside. The owner was verbally abusive and we left immediately. We have been to Italy 3 times in 5 years and this by far was the worst experience we had. I would avoid this restaurant at all costs.
