“Character and charm in Montreuil”

We spent 5 days here on a cycling break in the region. A lovely house with everything you need - including a full oven (I get fed up with the number of places that just have a hot plate and a microwave). Lovely bottle of wine to greet us to and a well stocked store cupboard so you don't need to buy things like loo rolls, bin bags and olive oil (if you finish something you are asked to replace it which is a good way of doing things). Lovely bathroom with a great bath and lots of hot water. Attic bedroom full of charm. Lovely courtyard garden to sit and relax in. WIFI very reliable. Maureen the owner very easy to deal with and responsive. House is just outside the ramparts and a 5 minute stroll to the bars and restaurant. The area is great for walking and cycling and a perfect place for a mini break.

“We would love to go back.”
Reviewed 29 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We all loved this pretty house. We felt so welcome. There were so many lovely extras. Pretty flowers, lots of logs, bottle of wine, nice and clean. Good location, walking distance to town centre. Exactly what we needed for a relaxing break.
The owner very helpful too. Thank you.

“Delightful.”
Reviewed 25 February 2014 for a stay in February 2014

The cottage was a delight to stay in. Full of character and charm, clean, comfortable and well stocked with everything we needed for a winter visit. The log burner was an added bonus and great to come back to and added an additional cosiness. The helpfulness and thoughtfulness provided by the owner (in notes and emails) made the whole trip completely hassle free and a pleasure.
Am planning a return visit in a different season to enjoy the garden next time.

"We thoroughly enjoyed our winter break at 16 Grand Rue. Maureen’s town house is delightful, very warm, cosy and comfortable with loads of character and together with the wonderful ramparts of Montreuil made our stay perfect."

“Lovely cottage spoiled by cleanliness and attitude of owner”

The setting and location of this house are superb. Nestling on a historic street just below the town gate, we were impressed by the view from the outside. However immediately on entering it was clear that the house was in no way as clean as we would have expected. I accept that very old houses may have a musty smell especially after rainfall, but the smell of damp was overwhelming. What was also immediately apparent were the slug trails, which we found on the carpet, armchairs, kitchen work surfaces and kitchen towels. The worst surprise of all was inside the fridge, where we found two dead slugs, frozen onto the back of the inside of the fridge. The nasty surprises didn't end there. When we pulled back the bedsheets, the hairs we found looked very much like they had been slept in already and had not been changed. We immediately phoned Maureen and told her we would go and find alternative accommodation as we were not happy and she said she would give us a refund. At the town's tourist office we found that there were no other similar properties available anywhere near the town so we returned to the house. On the door we found a note from a neighbour, one of the owner's English friends, who having clearly received a phonecall from Maureen asked to see the complaints we had made. We were astonished that Maureen would think we were making the complaints up, and send a neighbour to check on us. The neighbour however corroborated what we had said and apologised on behalf of Maureen and suggested that the bed might have been slept in by the plumber who had recently visited. She also confirmed that Maureen thought that we might have been 'trying it on', and offered to call her back. Resigned to staying there as there was no alternative available we called Maureen back. I found her attitude bizarre, bordering on offensive. Whilst she did apologise and offered a single night refund, she was very defensive and even suggested that we were unhappy because 'maybe you don't get slugs in London'. She also said that she doesn't employ a cleaner but cleans it at the end of her previous stay. We duly began our stay here changing beds and cleaning fridges.

Management Response

The guests called me to complain about the bed linen which I had personally washed, ironed and put on the bed prior to his arrival. As I couldn't verify his complaint I apologised and gave him a thirty percent refund (he asked for a full refund). I told him where to find fresh bedlinen, which they used. After their departure I examined the original linen and found nothing wrong.

This is my first complaint in five years of letting this property.
