The newly renovated Parkroyal is one of the best hotels in Batu Ferringhi. It has large, modern, clean and nicely furnished rooms, and the public spaces have an upscale, chic ambience. We found the mattress and pillows extremely comfortable and appreciated the lighting options, such as nightlights. The TV didn’t get many channels, but the internet was extremely fast and reliable – better than anywhere else we’ve stayed in Southeast Asia. We were especially pleased by the large number of outlets with built-in adapters for US/European/Australian plugs. The gray slate bathroom had large, fluffy towels, plenty of space for toiletries, and a shower but no tub. We were very glad it was not one of those glass, see-thru bathrooms that are so popular these days!

The pools – one designed for adults, another with a slide that’s more for kids – are picturesque, surrounded by beautiful gardens, and the water is as warm as a bathtub. It was hard to get chairs around the adult pool (they’re all taken by 9am), but there are plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas and tables on the grassy lawn, available all day.

Although the hotel is located right on the beach, no one really uses it: you won’t see any chairs or towels on the beach or people in the water. That’s the dirty little secret of Batu Ferringhi – no one swims in the ocean because the it’s murky and filled with jellyfish. It’s a shame because the water is warm and the waves are gentle. Otherwise it would be perfect for swimming. However, there are horses to ride on the beach and a variety of different boats and water sports available. Lots of people go walking on the beach to watch the sunsets.

The hotel is well-located, right near the night market and two hawkers markets (food courts). There are also numerous small restaurants, shops, and laundries nearby, and a bus stop (for both the Rapid Penang 101/102 and the Hop On/Hop Off) right in front. It’s about a 45-60 minute ride to the middle of Georgetown, depending on traffic.

There is a huge breakfast buffet at the Parkroyal, with a wide variety of Asian and Western selections, and several vegan and gluten-free options. However, we were disappointed with all the other food we ordered at the hotel and bar: salad was drenched with a horrible mayonnaise dressing; French fries were tasteless; nachos were just plain disgusting. Even the iced tea was undrinkable -- and the mixed drinks at the bar were even worse.

We also thought the service at the hotel was sub-par, although all the staff were warm, welcoming and courteous. Various kinds of classes and activities are advertised that do not occur unless enough people sign up for them at least a day in advance, and even then, they can be cancelled without notice. Room cleaning was very superficial, items were routinely forgotten to be restocked, and they didn’t respond to our call about ants in the room. The water regularly backed up in the drains and leaked out all over the bathroom floor.

Also, keep in mind that this is a family hotel – LOTS of children of all ages. There is a playroom for kids and they seem to have many child-focused activities. However, people were bringing young children even to the places that should have been set aside for adult-time, such as the nightly musical guests in the bar area. The hotel has a terrific band that plays from about 7-11 pm, but even late at night, kids were running around, screaming and playing with dominoes while we were having drinks and trying to listen to the band. Thankfully, we did not have any problems with noise in the room, only in the public areas.

The resort is directly located on the beautiful Ferringhi Beach and the swimming pool is lovely.

Great hotel, staff friendly & helpful! Lovely room, water, tea,Coffee replaced daily. Homemade,Biscuits Delievery daily! Thanks to our lovely, hardworking cleaner, Nancy!

Only “ grumble” drinks very expensive! Yes you expect to pay more for drinks in a hotel, however even on the “ Happy hour” prices way over the top! So nobody really drinking in the bar, in the evening, so no atmosphere that you, usually get on your holiday, when you meet up for a “ night cap” catch, etc round your bar!

The entire hotel is transformed, its fantastic!! The rooms are well appointed, spacious. The pools are awesome, food is good and most importantly the people are great. Very nice beach and it's kid friendly. Perhaps a little more stuff in the Kids Club to keep the children (8-12 year old) amused would be asomething to consider in the future. I will surely be coming back
