we also saw kiwis at the Maori Cultural centre in Rotorua. There were more kiwis to see here (3 brown, 1 large spotted) and it better lighting (for us). We got to see them at feeding time and got to see the woman doing the feeding being attacked by the bird, Atu. Very amusing. They rotate their kiwis on display so if you go you may only see two - during their dark/lights off time. It was a rainy day in NZ and perhaps that is why it was stinky. Mostly smelled like urine in many parts of the park - you walk around outside to see lots of different birds. The Kea and the kaka birds were also interesting to see. Also got to see the oystercatcher outside the Coromandel. Maybe even saw a white one....or maybe that's another bird. for 20 NZD its a little pricey for what you get. but everything in this country is not cheap.
With the rain, it was nice to see everyone being able to use the Kiwi house's umbrellas on loan during their walk. A lot of the walk is covered by trees so we didn't get too wet with our rainjackets. I liked seeing the goldfinches and the pukeko. Glad to have the chance to see all these birds here.
