“Great Times in Sarnano at Villa San Raffaello/June 2015”
Reviewed 15 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

We have returned to the US after spending nearly three weeks in Italy, two of those in the Le Marche region (Adriatic coast), specifically in the hill-top village of Sarnano at the foot of the Sibillini Mountains National Park. The historic town is largely unchanged since the 1500s, but, rather than try to describe, here's a link to pictures of the town (village really): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sarnano.

We stayed at Villa San Raffaello, an "agriturismo" villa located just outside Sarnano. For us, it was a great location, comfortable and clean. The host, Damien Conrad, a London transplant, made the experience even more enjoyable through producing a detailed and extensive booklet in English that covered what was going on and when, which he constantly updated for the entire of our visit. Great host. Here's a link to his website which provides much more information: http://www.villasanraffaello.com/

A couple of other notes: Damien expects an abundant and quality wine harvest from his little vineyard (located on the property) in mid September 2015, so if anybody is contemplating an Italian vacation in September, this is a location to seriously consider. We made some great salads and other dishes using the herbs and other ingredients from the garden outside-- the wild finocchio (fennell) worked particularly well with the local aged parmesan and wild mushrooms.

More generally, there is plenty to do (we were 2 adults and two children) in the area, from beach-going to shopping, to hiking to wandering though Roman ruins near the village of Urbisaglia -- literally we wandered through these ruins on our own unaccompanied-- the remains of a-once thriving Roman town destroyed by marauding Visigoths in the 400s, mentioned as a cautionary tale in Dante's Paradiso. I could go on but you get the idea. There is a Michelin rated restaurant at the top of the new town (from the middle ages), which was a pleasant surprise.

Getting then to the eating and drinking, our high expectations for Italian food were far exceeded; there are numerous restaurants in Sarnano and its immediate vicinity each serving its own individual fare, typically made in-house. Our particular favorites were La Marchigiano, serving slow cooked wild boar in olives and various herbs, and La Grotta Dei Golosi serving fabulous gnocchi "fatti in casa" and the local wine Rossa Piceno Superiore (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_R ... tml#photos).

There is a also a lovely little bar in town, set in the battlements of the old town-wall called "Decantatore," which is fabulous setting, serving delicious wines and locally brewed beer--a great place to start and end one's evening. One wouldn't expect to find find a better "hole in the wall" (literally) elsewhere Italy! Bravo Fernando e Alessandra!

It is a distinct advantage to be able to speak some Italian (we speak basic Italian) because English is generally not spoken. You will get by without it, but the experience is so much better if you can engage the locals on some basic level. The locals are friendly and helpful and the smiles are genuine, unlike some we experienced in other highly produced "Italy for Americans" elsewhere.

Sarnano and Villa San Raffaello (in the presence of the host Damien) are the real deals, authentic and charming--we will be going back for sure.

“Another lovely stay at Villa San Raffaello”
Reviewed 12 July 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Our fourth trip to the Villa and lovely as ever.
Beautiful mountain walk, swimming in Lake Fiastra and then one of the best meals we've ever had in Italy at the Refuggio overseen by the owner, who is also the local mayor.
Sarnarno is such a gem, the gorgeous square at the top of the town, great restaurants and bars, and shopping for local produce. And rural Italy is such good value.
Villa San Raffaello is comfortable and stylish with a large pool and Damien and Sharon are great hosts.

“Fantastic accommodation in a beautiful part of Italy. We want to go back!”
Reviewed 24 June 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Everything about our trip to Villa San Raffaello exceeded expectations and we had a brilliant week. The apartment was spacious, very comfortable and had everything we needed including good wifi. We were in the top floor apartment which has great views out out onto the Sibillini mountains. We felt completely at home and were made to feel very welcome by the owner, Damien, who was extremely helpful throughout our stay with local advice about where to go, what to do and which restaurants to try.

The villa has fantastic gardens, which guests can use, and plenty of space for everyone who's staying there to have privacy. You can swing in a hammock in the vineyard, chill in a deck chair, or sit by the pool and just stare at the beautiful mountains. There's also areas for bbqs and eating outside.

The villa is about 1km from Sarnano which is a beautiful little town full of charm. The local character has been preserved and it's full of local shops, bars and restaurants. But not in a touristy way at all. We ate at several of the restaurants all of which were very good and very reasonably priced. I still can't get over paying €1.50 for a very large glass of the local red wine!

The Sibillini mountains and national park are big reasons for visiting this part of Italy. The area is packed full of hikes through wild flower meadows, up mountains or along gorges. It's all stunning! The Villa is in the foothills of the mountains and 500 meters from the national park so everything is easily accessible.

We didn't know too much about the area before visiting, but knew that it wasn't as touristy as some other parts and we weren't disappointed. It felt very genuine and the area is absolutely stunning. We're already making plans to return!

“Everything we could have asked for in an Italian countryside villa!”
Reviewed 3 June 2015 for a stay in April 2015

Spent 4 nights here in mid-April with my mom on a vacation touring different places in Italy. We absolutely loved staying here. It was our favorite part of our 3-week trip. The views from the kitchen window in Apartment Grazia were spectacular, and I couldn't get used to seeing them every morning even after 4 days. The apartment was so comfortable and well-appointed. It was more than enough room for the two of us and would suit a family or group of 6-7 perfectly. Wi-fi access and all the amenities were as advertised, and everything else about the villa and the grounds and the location exceeded our expectations. Damien and Sharon have done a BEAUTIFUL job restoring this old villa into a vacation paradise, and its location outside the charming Medieval walled city of Sarnano makes it even more magical. Damien was an excellent and gracious host, answering all of our questions, giving us helpful information about the town and how to navigate getting food and supplies for our stay, and delighting with us when we found out information about our ancestors from Sarnano.

I will definitely be coming back to visit this place again as soon as I can, and I encourage all travelers looking for a peaceful, relaxing, authentic Italian countryside experience not to pass up this treasured property!! It has so much more to offer than what we were able to experience in our short stay, but I look forward to going back someday to explore the surrounding mountains and all the natural splendor of the national parks nearby. Truly a wonderful, soul-filling experience here, we cannot thank our hosts enough for creating it for us.

“Villa San Raffaello achieved our expectations.”
Reviewed 3 June 2015 for a stay in May 2015

Villa San Raffaello achieved our expectations. The welcome was warm, the accommodation was spacious, the pool was maintained to a high standard and our hosts were most helpful. We found good rambling on tracks and quiet roads around Sarnano, as well as more adventurous outings into the Sibillini mountains.
