Oakridge Resort Lake Wanaka
Ranked #13 of 20 Hotels in Wanaka

In truth we chose the wrong place in the Oakridge Grand Mercure at Wanaka. If you're on a quiet weekend trip, or looking for a resort with all the bells and whistles for the family it's great. As a one night stand on a five week road trip, it's not. With all the stuff to be dragged in then taken out the next day up and down a narrow staircase, it's a bind. Add to that that there's next to nowhere to stow stuff and it really didn't meet our needs. That said. it's a nice place. The room is as good as filled with a king size bed and the space above the stairwell is cunningly utilised as a quasi "love nest" seating and table arrangement. More often than not that would have been used as a wardrobe, but instead there's a cut down version to one side of the room. In the room there's a fridge which spring hinges left hand behind the right hand side of the door. ( if that gives you a headache working it out, just wait for the one when you let go of the fridge door to reach something inside!). There's tea and coffee making facility but the only available plug socket is tight under the tiny writing desk between wardrobe and entry corridor. The shower room is very good and features his and hers wash basins for exceedingly thin couples! However, all in all, we found it clean, very tidy, tastefully decorated and totally impractical!

My wife and I stayed 2 nights at the Oakridge Resort in Wanaka. We had a standard room which was modern and clean with a nice bathroom which is important to us. The staff were friendly and efficient. We had free breakfast included which was excellent and the waiter was very professional, helpful, and friendly.
We really liked the hot pools especially after a big walk one day.The location was just out of town with a lovely view of the mountains, and it only takes a few minutes to get into town by car.
We really enjoyed our time here and would definitely stay again.

Stayed one night at the Grand Mercure Oakridge Hotel. Check-in was easy and effecient, they even let us check in an hour early. Room was simple Kingsize room with ensuite, but modern and very clean. Bathroom was very nice. All the staff were helpful and very friendly. The pool area is lovely, and I can imagine would be very busy in the evenings after a hard day skiing! Location was perfect for us as we went to a wedding literally across the road. It is possible to walk into Wanaka township, although it might be a bit too far out for some people. I would definately stay here again, and would recommend it to others. Didn't eat there, so can't comment on the food.

I would not recommend this hotel. It is located outside of the main part of town so it is not convenient in terms of shopping or dining. The service level was satisfactory but not warm and the room layout was not comfortable.

I should say to start that I HATED the room we were put in and only realized the drawbacks after I had started to unpack. I was just too tired to relocate so we settled for what we were given. We were put in a ground floor unit next to the maintenance shed/road so we had no view at all. The other annoying thing is that there are three "apartments" in each unit but only one parking space and if you don't get that one, you can't park nearby because there is a wall between each space that clearly separates the space allocated to each unit. Given all of the wide open land in this part of the world, it is an extremely odd design.

We had a "studio room" which had a bed, two couches and a small kitchen. The layout was odd and with the two couches there was no place to put our luggage so we put them on one of the couches. The bed was comfortable but had only one bedside table and, as a result, only one bedside lamp. The standing lamp in the room had no light bulb. The bathroom was small and the windows were not sufficiently covered to give you privacy. They were frosted over but there was a good inch or so of clear glass around the frosted so we didn't turn on the light at night when using the bathroom.

Since we were on a three week vacation, we booked this room specifically for the washer/dryer. This was a high efficiency machine requiring you to put the detergent into one of three slots in a pull out drawer. Unfortunately, there were no instructions on which slot was which so it was trial and error before I figured out which slot to put the detergent in. The folks at the front desk didn't know either. Believe me, I was NOT a happy camper having to do three loads of laundry on my vacation!!

The kitchen had good appliances but was minimally equipped so don't plan to cook anything ambitious. We planned on a basic pasta w/sauce and salad but there wasn't even a colander.

With our package, buffet breakfast was basic but they would make you hot breakfast if requested. Free wifi had very good performance.

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room upstairs if you want a view.
