Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 1 Hotels in Yanuca Island
Reviewed 14 March 2011

We stayed at the Shangri-la resort in February 2011. As with most of Fiji the weather was great, the people were extremely friendly and helpful and a safe place for the kids. The resort has a lagoon type beach that that was clean, warm and in a great location. There was a great assortment of water activities that were there for you some free and some not. Additionally there was tennis, golf and mini golf. There are a select number of gift shops there for you as it is a taxi ride to get to any shop outside the resort . The resort has some 440 odd resort rooms in 4 storey blocks scattered on two sides of the resort. There a bures scattered past these and if you want a little luxury, privacy this is the way to go (we did). Like most of the Fiji resorts they are kid friendly. They have various child care services for the guests and for those that need to get away from the kids there was a restaurant and a pool that are kid free (GREAT). There are various restaurants of varying quality and pricing scattered amongst the resort. The main restaurant where you would go for breakfast also holds a buffet dinner at night. We had dinner there once and found the quality very poor and extremely over priced. Best quality and price we found was at the beach bar & grill not a big restaurant so in peak times I guess you will have to book! On that we stayed during off peak times and the hotel was only approximately 30% capacity, it was great, there was little to no waiting time for water activities, massages and restaurants.
In summary a nice place to visit. It can be a very expensive if you don’t watch where you are eat & drink. They do have happy hour at some bars but it’s not that happy and the times seem to be a little flexible. Personally I would avoid peak seasons (school holidays) as I think it would be just too hectic and not so relaxing.

Grounds beautiful. Ocean views beautiful. Pool in poor condition with some filtration problems - little bugs in water. No shelter or shade over pools which is much needed to help with respite from the scorching sun. Restaurants very poor quality and all seem to offer the same menu. Breakfast very nice service on linen table cloths with choice of indoor or out on balcony. Great buffet available for breakfast. Rooms more motel like - not resort type. Good fun to be had in Black Marlin bar during evenings with good music and dancing. Unfortunately, I would not choose this resort again. We spent a week at the Westin prior to going to the Shangri La and the comparison is chalk and cheese. Still made our own fun and enjoyed time with family. In general, fairly disappointing. Nice chapel for weddings overlooking ocean.

We stayed at this resort for two weeks in January - far too long. The location is beautiful, on the Coral Coast with lagoon and beach. However the resort is isolated on Yanuca Island - good in some ways but limits you to eating at the resort restaurants. Although there are a few restaurants the menus are too similar, the food poor to average and the service - well, let's just say it's 'Fiji Time'! The resort is very expensive. Our biggest gripe was that the resort is old and its showing its age. Our aircon did not work properly and the pillows and linen smelt of mould (as the the entire room). Our 'free' room internet connection did not work for the entire two weeks, although the pool areas do have WIFI. The rooms maids never left towels for some reason and we had to ring up on a daily basis...It would have been okay if we had been paying two or three star prices but we paid five star prices and were not very impressed. We sampled Sheraton Villas in Denarau on the way out and should have stayed there! A much much nicer resort and you can visit and eat at the neighbouring resorts. It's worth checking out the Shangri La, but don't stay there too long.

I expect that this resort was once a five star establishment. In July 2010 it was something like a 3.5 star resort.
It was very expensive and rated and recommended highly.

But:

- the food was poor to average
- the rooms were barely ok; I'm guessing it's the original fitout
- the whole place was very expensive
- the staff were generally lovely but were clearly encouraged to "grab signatures" for money where ever they could
- the "entertainment" was poor
- I don't think there was anything "culturally" significant in the whole place

I'm pretty sure that the people that love and rate Shangri-La Fijian (and I know there are lots of them) are CUBS (there's lots of them there by the way) with lower expectations than I had. The problem for me is that I travel for work and have had other great holiday experiences so am able to make fair comparisons.

I do reiterate that the one highlight was the staff. They were all so lovely. It's a shame that my hard earned probably went to some multi-national rather than to the locals and it's a shame that the multi-national in question is prepared to screw over the patrons because I expect that means the lovely locals will ultimately get screwed over too.

If you are happy with a 2-3 Star service, then you cannot fault the Shangri-La's location in Yanuca.

As a regular traveler (30 wks per year) I have experienced the highs & lows of Hotels/Resorts around the world. The Shangri-La Fiji has many many issues, perhaps staying for 5 nights meant i was exposed to all of them.

I'm not going to into details all the problems, i've done that directly to Shangri-La's head office. The main criticism is the problems should never exist in a hotel charging luxury rates and claiming to be 4-5 stars.

An overview of what not to expect in a 4-5 star resort: Poor quality food in many of the restaurants, unfriendly staff, all level 2 rooms flood (heat from ground floor and poor airconditioning leaves large sticky puddles over the floor in hot days), upfront credit authorisation of AU$150 per night which was not discussed, incorrect bills ended up on the account daily, expensive bad quality food (get a package upfront if you can), deliberate manipulation of some food bills. Ok i'll stop there, as a 2-3 star resort, and with lower prices then fair enough you can expect this, but this resort is a complete rip-off. Save your money and head to the Sheraton.
