“A few niggles but a wonderful place for a large family get-together”
Reviewed 18 March 2014 for a stay in March 2014

We booked the OOB for a family party of 6 adults and 4 children (10, 5, 4,1 years old). The OOB offers a great space inside for everyone to come together without getting op top of each other. Outside space was minimal so it may not have been as suited to us as a family group had it been a summer trip. We were celebrating a 5th birthday and a 60th birthday so there were lots of special meals and cake baking taking place. The kitchen was very well stocked for all this cooking, the only thing that might have been useful is some tupperwear. We had taken a set of scales, mixing bowls etc and we need not have done. There are also plenty of glasses and mugs so there is no need to stand at the kitchen sink between every drinks run if you’re in a large group. A tip: don’t open the kitchen door if there is even a small draft as it blows out the flames on the hob (we nearly had a disaster as a result!). The showers were great and there was plenty of hot water for everyone. The beds were comfortable, which isn’t always the case in holiday rentals! The lounge area was cosy with the wood burning stove however there was not enough seating for the 10 people the OOB sleeps which, had we been a party of 10 adults, would have been an issue. The wood burning stove was only required on the last night but it was easy to use and all the kit you need is supplied.

The OOB has been built beautifully and there is quite literally wood everywhere, the down side to this is dust. Lots of the surfaces/beams were dusty which was not so good for one of the guests allergies. The bathrooms weren’t perfectly clean either and one guest had to clean the hair out of plughole to get the water to run out properly; not pleasant. Lastly, most of the bedrooms have large windows without curtains. All the windows makes the OOB beautifully light but the downside is that if you’re a light sleeper or have children in your group, you are likely to have some early mornings (about 5am for us in March), in the height of the summer they could of course be very early mornings!! The large French doors out to the patio area could also do with some hooks to pin them back as they are large heavy glass doors that make a terrible bang when blown shut in the breeze and we feared for children’s fingers and the cost we’d incur if the glass was smashed! However, despite the few niggles we had a wonderful stay at the OOB, the house itself creates a fantastic atmosphere, nice and relaxing but also a good space for fun and celebration. The music system is great, the kitchen is well stocked and the space afforded guests inside is superb. It is a lovely location, there’s lots to do nearby and the guide provided in the welcome folder is very useful.

As an aside, we can highly recommend the Suffolk Owl Sanctuary, we took a picnic and spent almost a whole day there, there is lots to do at Soneham Bars (where the Sanctuary is situated) so if you are staying at OOB for a longer period there is a day’s family entertainment only a few miles away. We are thinking of booking ot for a family Christmas break next year, the large central area must look fabulous with a Christmas tree in it!

Thank you very much for the compliments and the valued feedback and suggestions.

Since your visit I am pleased to say that things have moved on at Old Oak Barn.

In terms of the outside area, the plot is just under an acre and is 'L-shaped' with the barn positioned in the horizontal bit of the L. As the barn is newly renovated a lot of the surrounding area was earth and wasteland. At the time of your visit, the immediate area surrounding the barn was already turfed and paved. The vertical piece of the plot was seeded in late 2013 and is now looking lovely with plenty of space for children to play. There's even a wooded area at the end of the plot.

More tupperware has since been provided in the kitchen.

Two large leather Chesterfield armchairs have sine been purchased to address the seating issue raised.

The wood burning stove is a great feature in the lounge area of the barn giving that area a very cosy feel - something barns can often lack. The ground-floor of the barn has thermostat controlled underfloor heating ensuring guests are never cold.

The cleaners have been informed about the dust and the plug-holes and have been added to a check-list maintained by the house-keeper.

At the time of this review all of the bedrooms had curtains, however, due to some high up and difficult to reach feature triangular windows in the roof and skylights a solution was required to block out the light in the bedrooms. I am pleased to say, this has since been done.

Hooks have been fitted to the main French doors leading to the patio area to prevent them slamming in the wind.

Thanks very much for all the feedback - as you can see, it is taken very seriously. I now need to update some of my photos to reflect the changes!

“Lovely place to reunite with friends”
Reviewed 27 January 2014 for a stay in January 2014

Beautiful barn with homely feeling. Not only was the master bedroom large and comfortable, the house was filled with charm. Beautifully decorated and cared for by its owner. All rooms made up to the high standards. Decor added a sense of home to the atmosphere that is often lost in some more commercial establishments.
Fantastic place, we would highly recommend for a relaxing weekend away with family or friends.
