We spent one night here. It is a great location for aurora viewing, glacier hikes, and not far from the Iceberg lake and diamond beach. Friendly efficient staff, clean rooms, and good food in the restaurant!

We travelled to Skaftafell with 23 high school students. We were very well taken care of here. The rooms were clean, the staff friendly, and the views were amazing! We can’t say enough about the food! Twenty-three teenagers were totally satisfied and overjoyed with their absolutely delicious meals and courteous servers. The hotel staff gave us a call when they spotted the Northern Lights and we had two nights of amazing light shows. A most memorable experience for all of us! The hills just behind the hotel are the perfect northern-light-watching/photographing landscape. There’s not much in the immediate area but a gas station but the hotel is tucked up beside a massive glacier. This is a great place to stay for access to Europe’s largest glacier, Vik and all its wool products and definitely a great place for viewing the Northern Lights

Hotel Skaftafell offers very functional accommodation in a warm and friendly environment, but its main selling points are the breathtaking backdrop with the mountains and glacier just behind and its location close to the Vatnajokull National Park.
The rooms were clean with decent beds and showers and the bar has great views across to the glacier. Breakfast was adequate.

The hotel is fairly basic with good wifi and TV in the rooms. The showers are tiny but there is an ample supply of hot water. The breakfast is acceptable with no hot food options. Two things that were excellent were the friendliness of the people who work there and the proximity to the glacier, which can be accessed very conveniently via a path from behind the hotel. Dinner was pretty good with lots of fresh vegetables, and the pasta was really good. The alternative at the gas station across the street looked awful.

A great place to spot the Northern Lights! If you want them to, the staff in fact also call you in the room when the activity is high and the lights can be seen, so you don't have to constantly sit by the window.
