I suggest you start in the morning. I have done it thrice. It was not easy any of those times and I am a runner. I have experienced the magic of a cloud passing over whilst up there and it is truly special. It is HARD & it is STEEP & it is sometimes muddy. Be sure you do not miss the turn sign-I haven't suffered the consequences of this but I have heard of others getting lost. Be careful. It is a magical spot up there and a beautiful view of Matagalpa and the surrounding rainforest/area. Apparently there are steps but I have only done the trail. When you hit the road go right and through the gate and left up the stairs after the gate-otherwise you will find yourself in denser forest during the home stretch to the top.

We hiked over the Cerro Apante, with a guide, from Matagalpa to the town of San Ramon, about 16 kilometers. The hike is only for the fit and experienced with good hiking shoes, but the rewards are there: beautiful birds, howler monkeys, lovely orchids, and we saw one sloth. A guide is absolutely necessary to go beyond the mirador, as trails cross back and forth, go through coffee plantations, and so on.

After a long walk the view is definitely worth the hike, but journey is also great. Make sure to pray the stations as you go up. It's an ancient tradition that God will grant just about any request that is asked at the 14th station! Make sure to bring a jacket in winter months.

Had a fantastic time climbing up cerro apante. It is a straight drive south from parque ruben dario, i would recommend a motorbike as it was a steep climb to the entrance. The hike itself took us about an hour and 20 minutes, but you can sit at the mirador for as long as you want and the view is really beautiful. Also the ranger who you pay to get in is very cute and showed us his garden and told us about the animals that live there. Very enjoyable.

I walked all the way to the reserve from my hostel (20-30 minutes). The entrance fee is 30 cordobas (US$1). There is a very nice man at the entrance that will give you a receipt, show you a map he drew and explain how you can get to the mirador and the cross.

It is quite a hard hike. You have to go over rocks, over and under tree trunks, and you even have to climb in some places. Don't attempt this if you are really out of shape. Some places were very slippery. I recommend that you bring a friend, just in case something happens. There is not a lot of people up there. I also recommend that you wear sunglasses. Not so much for the sun, but for the spiky branches covering some parts of the path.

Once you get to the mirador, it's a 5 minute walk to the cross. You then have to climb 225 stairs to get to the cross. You are rewarded by the beautiful view of Matagalpa surrounded by the mountains.

The way down is also tricky in some places, but easier than the way up. Make sure you wear good shoes!
