“A gem of a historic hotel--now, about those bathrooms . . .”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 September 2012

Having stayed in bed and breakfast inns, as well as other historic hotels over the years, I can report that the Wawona is one of the nicest, best maintained of all that I have experienced. The room was very comfortable (if a little bit cozy), but it was furnished quite nicely. The veranda (porch) is really an extension of the room, with its sitting area and magnificent view. The public rooms downstairs were great, including the dining room with its incredible windows overlooking the surrounding forest. Overall, a wonderful experience.

Now, about those bathrooms, most of the rooms do not have en suite bathrooms. The common toilet and shower facilities are located in another part of each building, necessitating a walk outside from one's room, on the veranda, around the corner--not convenient, not at all. I realize that this was the way that these hotels were constructed a century ago (the main building here dates from 1879), but, really, long-distance bathrooms in the 21st Century. They have modernized the lighting (electricity)--why not the plumbing, as well? That being said, I got used to it (sort of), and that was really the only downside to a wonderful park experience at Yosemite. Unless you are going for the luxury of Ahwahnee in the Valley (which is on my list now), the Wawona is the next best alternative, It is quiet, peaceful, close enough to the Valley, close to the Mariposa Grove, and reasonable enough, considering this is a national park property.

Room Tip: Try for a front-facing room with a view of the fountain.

Beautiful location, nice atmosphere, spotless, good food and substantial breakfast included. With rather limited funds, we opted for room with shared bathrooms, which were very clean, with hot water and plenty towels. This hotel is not only beautiful, but a very special place with long tradition. You have e very good piano player in the evening at the hotel lounge. The place is quiet and we slept very well.
The parking is large enough and the bus going through Yosemite attractions stops close to the hotel.
I am very glad that we had stayed in Wawona Hotel instead of Signature Tent cabins in Curry Village, which we were also taking into consideration. Perhaps this decision saved us from hantavirus.

Room Tip: higher floors are quieter

Lets start with the positives. This hotel is a beautiful spot right in Yosemite. But that's it.

Avoid Room 222! The staff told me they only put one night stayers or late bookers in there. Why? Because at 4.50am the laundry and delivery trucks arrive and wake you up, as the room is next to that area! I complained and was given a 25% discount.

The room had a connecting door to the next door room's bathroom and you could hear EVERYTHING!

The room was small too. The light next to the bed was broken.

I still am having a battle with the hotel to release a $60 authorisation fee from from credit card and they took ages to give us our refund. I called up and the front desk woman I spoke to was very blunt with me and talked over me and refused to accept blame for this continuing issue with releasing this fee.

There is little choice of accommodation in Yosemite but at $153 a room with no bathroom I would struggle recommending staying here.

As we book all our hotels after reading the reviews we are glad that we ignored some of the not so nice remarks about Wawona. We find the hotel unique. The old style is very special. We booked a room with a private bathroom. It's all very small but very charming. Perfect for the location in the woods. Our kids enjoyed spending some time in the swimming pool while we watched them from the porch enjoying some of the great wines they serve. Diner and breakfast were both good.
