Owner description: This National Historic Site marks the location of the Waiilatpu Mission, a Presbyterian mission ministering to the Cayuse Indians from 1836 to 1847. The mission, a way station for Oregon Trail pioneers, ended tragically with the killing of missionaries by the Cayuse.

Nothing spectacular but it’s free and well worth 30-60 minutes. The video in the visitor center is well done. The walking trail of the area is also well done. Go up to the monument—-the view is great on a clear day.

I was impressed that neither "manifest destiny" or "noble indian" trope dominated this presentation. I have substantial knowledge of the Whitmans, less of the native Americans, and found this exhibition informative. Do walk to the top of the hill, a short hike, and get a sense of space and time that surrounded that place.

This is a good stop. This site tells the sad story of the native populations. Small visitor center and displays tell the story well. Very knowledgeable staff at the visitor center.

This was a nice little stop as we were heading out of Walla Walla. Clean facilities and a good paved walkway. After spending the weekend drinking and eating indoors it was nice to be outside walking. Once you get to the top, you have a view of the region. Information boards along the trail give you a little bit of history about the old settlement and it's significance.

Special place visit and learn about the Whitman family and their mission - relationship with Native Americans - deaths at the mission - Oregon Volunteers and the Indian War. A place to visit full of old Walla Walla and Pacific NW history.
