We really enjoyed the USS Cairo exhibit. The technology feat to retrieve it from the river and then restore it is a story in itself. It is also great to be able to see a specimen and walk through it. Very interesting site.

When you look at this ship and realize that it took a ton of coal an hour to keep the steam up, it is incredible it could float. It must have been horrible for the men who had to work on the ship, the conditions must have been deplorable. It just goes to show the dedication of the people who came to our country for a better life and of th men that fought for our freedom then and now. It is amazing that so many artifacts from the ship survived.

If you've come to the battlefield, you'll also get access to the USS Cairo, one of the very first iron-clad ships ever built. It was sunk prior to the battle Vicksburg is so famous for. It's in almost pristine condition, and walking through the ship is a haunting experience.

The best part of the Vicksburg National Military Park. Not being a history buff I was truely indatuated with this area. Along with the reminates of the USS Cairo the museum houses artifacts found when the ironclad shp was salvaged.

The remains of the U.S.S. Cairo has been expertly reassembled and missing pieces reconstructed to show how the shipped would have appeared. The ship lies under a permanent canopy protecting it from the elements. The modern deck allows you to walk as if you were on-board the iron clad ship. The museum sunken into the side of a hill displays a number of relics found during its excavation from the river. It is a must see if you are ever in Vicksburg. It is something that can't be experiences anywhere else. Just the size will amaze you.
