“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 November 2011

We scheduled our trip almost a year in advance. After that there was suddenly several not so pleasant reviews that made us rethink the wisdom of staying here. That would have been a mistake!
Elevators: All 3 functioning and in great working order. Quiet and quick.
Check-In: Seamless and easy. Room ready when promised.
Room: Very clean and above average. Timeshare had several dishes, coffee pot with coffee and full condo-style kitchen. Had a portable landline phone with free local calls. A/C worked very well. 2 separate units kept the right room cool at the right time. Fantastic air flow through the room so that most of the time AC was not necessary except during the day. Bed above average comfortable. They were in the process of changing out some of the mattresses while we stayed there. Security was always there, and key was required to get to elevators.
Laundry: Way above average. Clean, reasonable and really good machines. Was another pleasant surprise.
Pool: Clean, with large deck and plenty of chairs all in good condition. Pool was crystal clear.
Gym: Near state of the art equipment all working and in great condition. Used a lot by residents, but always clean and uncrowded.
Cleanliness: 8 or 9 out of 10 overall. Facilities had been updated for an older facility.Nice artwork on walls.
Bus line was located right outside - extremely convenient.
Close to all shopping, both mall and flea market. Many restaurants within easy walking distance. View from our 19th floor towards the mountains yielded kayakers in the canal and a daily rainbow.
ADDITIONAL: WiMax wifi was available very inexpensively.

Very satisfied with stay. Would recommend and also stay again.

We exchanged with RCI to The Royal Kuhio. The location is very good, within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, beach etc. The entrance has the feel of a dated appartment block but it does make you feel more secure having a 24 hour door keeper.

We had a good sized room with a balcony overlooking the waterway and mountains. It was quite a spectacular view. We watched the locals in canoes or skiffs, practicing for an upcoming festival on the waterway.

There is a bus stop directly outside which makes it easy to reach outlying attractions such as the shopping malls, Pearl Harbour, Downtown Honolulu etc.

There is a good pool which was mostly very quiet.

The building itself has old lifts but they are functional, the decor leaves much to be desired but all in all it was a pleasant stay. Considering the cost, it is somewhere that we would return to but not as a first choice.

If you are new to VI or just trying VI, this is not going to put those points to good use. Understandably, good hotels are expensive in Waikiki, however, so are the V I points and maintenance dues. Our flight got us there in the evening. While unloading, there was an argument going on in front of the hotel and a couple of what seemed to be hookers just around the street corner. The room (we got a 1-BR) was small, though clean, with outdated decor. The pool was algae-green. Way under-staffed in the front desk. No free Wi-Fi here. Don't ever forget your keys---they charge you $50.00 to have someone open your room as they have to call somebody in off office hours. Parking garage feels safe though it felt like it took a mile to get to your stall! Service people are friendly. Security---friendly as well. Overall cleanliness is good.

average 3 star close to everything. stayed on 27th floor and kept hearing sirens every night. 2 of 3 elevators did not work for 4 out of 7 days. met a couple who had a twisted ankel and broken bone from elevator accident. pool was closed twice during week from 9am - 1pm. RCI rep was surprised to hear this, but staff said they clean twice per week but could not tell me why they don't do it really early or late. carpet had stains from dog. unit beside us had a yappy dog that wouldn't shut up. it was well equipped and it is waikiki, so you can't complain too much - as long as you know you're getting average 3 star. take the bus or a car to the walmart for your groceries to save you a lot. the RCI timeshare didn't work with our flights so we called the hotel and they booked us for $119 per room per night. should have just forgot all about RCI ($500maintenance + $250exchange for exactly 7 nights) and just booked directly with hotel and then only stayed 5 nights and moved to north shore for 5 nights instead of a full week. guests in hotel were all nice. big/older hawaiin security guard is amazing - gives you lots of advice. air conditioning worked well. check-in/out were quick and easy. could have taken public bus from airport instead of $40 cab ride. bus will take you everywhere including walmart, alo moana mall and diamond head. stayed on both sides of building and loved all the views both at night and in the daytime. hotel loans beach chairs, beach toys, rice cookers, whatever you need. food pantry is close to buy groceries if you can't get to walmart.
beware of local time-share people. go for the 2 hour presentation to get a freebee, but DON'T BUY ANYTHING.
hotel was okay. hawaii was picture perfect. i love hawaiins. the nicest people in the world.

I stayed at the Royal Kuhio in August 2011 in room 1610 via Alli beach Rentals. It was alright, room was big, comes with kitchen but nothing special. Outside was pretty loud, room seems outdated but gets the job done. Pull out couch was really uncomfortable. Gym was really outdated, the only thing i kind of liked was having the pool tables. If you're on a budget stay here, if you have more money, stay at something better like the Aston Waikiki Banyan

Room Tip: The higher 3 floors have bigger rooms and you'll hear the traffic less since the
