“A pleasant enough hotel”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 February 2012

We stayed at the Outrigger Luana Waikiki hotel for seven nights from February 5th to 12th in a studio room with a kitchenette. The room was exactly as advertised, but the hotel itself is an older though renovated building. This means, as others have pointed out, that there is no central air-conditioning. Instead one has a somewhat noisy unit in one’s room. While the bathroom had a large shower, there was no bathtub. A minor point perhaps, yet one that may be important to some.

The hotel is located on Kalakaua Avenue which is the main drag in Waikiki. OK, so you are not on the beach but nothing is very far in Waikiki. Considering the climate of Hawaii, just about everything is within walking distance. All in all we had a good time.

Room Tip: Book a room with a kitchenette, we weren't impressed with the breakfast places in Waikiki.

The Outrigger Luana is part of the Outrigger series of hotels in Waikiki, and this one is a ten minute walk from the beach on Kalakaua Avenue. The hotel itself is average with clean large bedrooms, but small and slightly outdated bathrooms. The lobby also appears small for such a large hotel but it has a lot of seating. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and ready to help with whatever guest needs require their attention, whether it is directions to a restaurant, recommendations for activities, or early check-in. The major drawbacks to the hotel room were the cramped bathroom space, the cracks along the building's interior hall, and the old fashioned decor throughout the building. The rooms do have a medium sized refrigerator and are stocked with cutlery, dishes, and glassware. If renting a car, be aware that parking at the Luana is a steep $25/day charge. Its convenient location to other beach front hotel resorts and the active shopping areas on Kalakaua Avenue but slightly out of the main hubbub make it worthwhile.

Just stayed at the Luana for 5 nights while vacationing with family in Oahu. The hotel itself is just average when it comes to the room which has basic appointments. The bathroom was small and the decor a bit dated and in slight disrepair (cracks in the wall and paint discolorations). However, considering its location about 10 minutes to the beach and 5 minutes to high-end shopping and restaurants, the price makes the Luana a good value. The rooms and the hotel were clean, the staff friendly and helpful, and our room had a kitchenette with a small fridge, and plates, cups, and utensils, but no stove or microwave. We originally selected this hotel based on perceived value and though there is no direct beach access, or sweeping views from your room, the location is right at the edge of the action giving us what we wanted: access to the action, but just far enough to not get swept up in it. For value minded travelers, I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on a higher floor.

Just stayed at Luana over President's weekend. The location was great, a short walk to a lot of food, bars and about 5 minutes to the beach. The rooms aren't anything fancy but they have everything you need, including a little kitchenette. The staff was friendly and accommodating the activities desk is very helpful and knowledgeable about things to do. The pool is very small, but who needs the pool when you have the beach right behind you. I only went to the pool to lay out and tan one day when I was too lazy to take the 5 minute walk to the beach. The fitness center is also decent. This hotel is one of the best options in the Waikiki area for the price.

Room Tip: I paid an extra $10 a night for the partial ocean view room. It was worth turning over in bed in the...

I stayed in the outrigger from October 18th til the 29th 2011. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the fron desk. The lobby is a little dated but very well air conditioned throughout the hotel. The room was very clean, simple and very comfortable beds. It included a small kitchenette for making toast and coffee in the morning.there is a small freeze/fridge as well as a balcony overlooking the city with an ocean view! They have a well kept pool outside and a nice sun deck with towels put out every morning [front desk is happy to refresh your towels anytime!] and an outdoor bbq area next to the gym. There is also a reception area on the 2nd floor which has different events-wine tastings... Also it is a 10 minute walk to Waikiki beach and right along the main strip close to lots of great shopping and restaurants! I went for nightly walks and discovered so many great places [Cheescake Factory, Ala Moana Center [the largest open air mall in the world] , Keos thai restaurant, and my favourite Italian restaurant Arancino- lobster to die for! Very high energy!! I walked through all the hotels around the city. Gorgeous gardens in the Hilton Hawiian Village with flamingoes, turtles, parrots, koi fish, penguins! Great prices for what you get! The front desk is very helpful and if you plan on extra activities its cheaper to book through this hotel. we did the North Shore shark cage diving as well as the dolphin/snorkelling catamaran tour. Both were amazing and picked us up in a shuttle and drove us back for an xtra fee. I would definately go back again and recommend it to everbody!!
