Owner description: Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy, is a marvel of opulence, innovation and political intrigue. Meticulously restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls. Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii’s royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

The docent that led our tour was a retired professor and truly provided a glimpse in to the royal past of Hawaii. We felt as if we were behind the scene guests during the height of Hawaii's royal family. We were able to walk all the rooms including dining areas, library and bedrooms. For those under the assumption that these royals were merely island natives will be astounded as to the education and foresight of many of these royals.

This was one of the true highligts of our time in Honolulu

Go on a Friday if you can. The Royal Hawaiian band plays free at noon. Very good tour guide. The grounds are beautiful and that is free. Seeing the palace is $20 but well worth it. Gorgeous house and furnishings. Tip--We found that it is very cheap to ride a city bus from Wakiki for $2.50 each, round trip. Several other things are in the same area of town. One of the better things to see and do in Honolulu

We recommend a visit to the Palace to all our visiting friends and family. Gives you a great view into Hawaii's history and some interesting tidbits about Hawaii (like the Palace had electricity before the White House) and the King had a phone connection between the Palace and his boathouse. Well worth the visit...and enjoy the palace grounds for a picnic after.
