This place was recommended by our friends found online. We were staycationing in Waikiki so was looking for something within walking distance. We had called in and was able to get a table for 6 within the hour. I would have never known that this restaurant existed because it's not in a higb traffic area. The restaurant may be small but the quality of the food was incredible. Will definitely go back when we do another staycation!

Exceptional food and great service.

The owner seemed a little grumpy to start with but once we chatted with him he was a lovely guy.

Prawns were amazing along with the Kimchi fried rice. We ended up ordering 2 of everything it was so good.

Very reasonable pricing considering its central location to Waikiki.

So, in Japan, Izakayas are recognizable by their red lanterns and tenuki. One ducks under a curtain and enters a place where the fare is sure to be fresh and a fair price. Pau Hana Base (time to chill) does not disappoint. (Although it is sans curtain and tenuki.)

We had deep fried squid, fried garlic, takoyaki, chicken yakitori and grilled smelt. And a lot of Asahi. It was terrific! (We often make a dinner of just appetizers.)

We will go back tonight to try the ribeye grilled tableside and some noodles.

It is down a little alley that you enter from Kuhio Avenue, just passed the Pho place. Please do not let its humble surroundings discourage, it is truly fabulous.

We will be back, again and again.
