Great hike for the family - 5 and up! Best for average fitness and above - the steep grade and stairs can be strenuous. The views of Honolulu and the Oahu coast are amazing!

You can get a bus or taxi but we walked from our hotel in Waikiki to Diamond Head and back to shed the jetlag. It does get busy but the views especially over Waikiki/Honolulu are great. There is a lot of climbing and steps so take your time and plenty of water. Took about 4 hours round tour including a wholesome lunch at the Diamond Head Market & Grill on Monsarrat Avenue.

Everyone will tell you it’s a very easy hike but actually it’s pretty hard, specially if it’s on a sunny and warm day.
The fact that you’re on a old volcano crater is very amazing.
The hike is an hour up and 45 minutes coming down.
The best is to be there very early you will have a better experience. The heat takes a lot of your energy.
Take water with you and be rewarded with a pineapple smoothie when you’re done

This really is a very doable walk for anyone who can walk up a steep hill for 5-10mins. It'll get your heart rate up, but it's really not that bad. For two people in their mid thirties after 3 weeks of no exercise, we were fine- definitely puffed out at a few points but there are lots of spots to stop and breathe. The path isn't paved and you're walking on rocks and dirt, so walking shoes are preferable. There were lots of families- young kids and older people. Views were really stunning.
We went in the afternoon of Easter Saturday and there were people going up and down, we didn't get stuck behind anyone or find the other people there an impact on our experience. We left the base at 1pm, reached the top by 1.30, had 15-20mins at the top for pictures and were back where we started by 2.20pm = 1hour 20mins total. We had a very quick and smooth decent, but 2hours allowance for anyone of average fitness is ample.

Visited in October 2017, and the weather was perfect even with the "spotty showers".
the hike was not without effort, and the path at times rough and even. There are sections with steep steps. But overall a very worthwhile experience. this applies also the the military history of the defensive role of Diamond Head.
