Not my favorite. Neat to see the lava along the trails, we did it at the end of the Wupatki Loop. Only takes about an hour to walk the paths. Worth stopping if your doing the entire loop but not just to see the crater.

We stopped to earn junior ranger badges and check out this park. We did the park in about an hour. You could spend more time hiking and exploring.

If you are mesmerized by geography, you will want to take time and visit Sunset Crater near Flagstaff, Arizona.

The volcanic ruins are really interesting to see. The volcanic rock is quite beautiful and such a contrast to much of the other landscape we saw on our trip. My 8 and 11 year old thought they were pretty awesome. Make a quick stop at the visitor center to get suggestions on the trails to hike. We chose some pretty easy ones. Note after seeing this, take the loop around to Wupatki. Save your receipt as that gets you into that National Monument too. You can easily do both in a day.

We visited Sunset Crater on the way back to Sedona after spending the morning at Walnut Canyon (also highly recommended). I had never seen a volcano up close and had no idea what to expect. Shortly after driving in past the visitor center, there appears this massive lava flow just off the main road and you start to get the idea that this is going to be a very different experience! You can hike right into the lava flow, which is otherworldly, and then after a short drive, there's a stop with 3-4 trailheads--all quite short and most of them paved. Each provides a different glimpse at the massive geologic forces at work and the different kinds of lava and ash the volcano produced.

We ran out of time and didn't get to visit the Wupatki National Monument, so we will have to come back!
