One of the top places to visit here in Sitka at least once. The knowledgeable staff were so helpful discussing the different birds at the center, can get up close to them all. Hilite of our trip!

It was a beautiful place. Staff was helpful and friendly. I was glad to see that rescued animals receive the help they deserve. I would go back and spend more time there in my next visit. Highly recommended and hope humans are more aware of the welfare of animals everywhere.

I went to the Alaska Raptor Center twice - the first to visit, and the second time because my photos didn't turn out. It was interesting to see how some of the birds were rehabilitated so they could return to the wild. It was a little sad to see some of the birds chained to a stake so that they could be seen by visitors.

Thank you Pakabear for your review. While our primary goal is to rescue and rehabilitate birds-of-prey so that they may be released back into the wild, unfortunately, some of the birds we treat are so severely injured, they cannot be released because they would not survive. We are able to provide permanent homes for a few of these birds, and work hard with our Federal Permit manager to place those we cannot house in other suitable sanctuaries and zoos.

Our 25 resident birds play a very important role in another pillar of our mission: Educating the public about Alaska’s wild birds and conservation. Their daily care involves training and enrichment regimes conducted by our highly trained staff. These birds have their own individual habitats where they spend the majority of the day and their days off, and within these enclosures, are free to move around as they please.

When we bring birds out into public areas for education programs, tours or during their training, the birds must be tethered to a perch. This is not only for their own protection, but for the safety of our visitors. We go above and beyond compliance requirements of both our Federal and State permits and follow guidelines set out within the “Raptors in Captivity” publication by The Raptor Center, College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota.

I apologize for the long-winded reply, but I hope it adequately reassures you that the birds in our care are provided with the best treatment possible.
