Owner description: The Whale Museum, located in beautiful Friday Harbor, Washington, opened to the public in 1979 as the first museum in the country devoted to a species living in the wild. Today, our museum continues to promote stewardship of whales and the Salish Sea ecosystem through education and research.

Learned much in a quaint museum. Small but informative.

Nice little museum dedicated to marine mammals in the Salish Sea area, primarily whales, dolphins and porpoises, but also including information on various seal, sea lions, etc.

The exhibits cover the biology, natural history and history of interaction with humans from the native Salish tribes to European / Russian / American peoples. There is a fair amount about the different "families" of Orcas that are full time residents in the area, including several biographies of individual whales.

Cost is very affordable ($6 adult) and the exhibits are well worth the price. I was there in the winter, which is not peak whale season (the grays are vacationing in Mexico by now) but there are occasional Orca sightings even in winter. There is a board that is updated regularly telling visitors where the latest whale sightings have been. There appears to be ongoing whale research supported by the museum, as there are some off limits offices with signs about "grumpy scientists" or some such keep out notice.

Don't expect to spend the whole day here, but it is worth an hour or so, especially if you are planning a whale watching tour later in your stay.

Small enough to be enjoyable. DVD showing was also short enough. $6 for an adult and $5 for senior. Within walking distance of downtown.

The Whale Museum is the place for you if you love Orcas. Their whale adoption program provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with the whales of the resident pods in the area as well as a chance to help scientific research in preserving these marvelous creatures.

Even though had been here many years ago, I went again last weekend when in Friday Harbor. I'm glad I did--very interesting stories, displays, videos. This is a humble, down-to-earth museum working on a limited budget. But it's amazing what they do with that budget. And the material is much more than just whales--you also learn about the Pacific Northwest region's ecosystem and other marine mammals.
One interesting display has a human skeleton next to a porpoise skeleton and a reader board talking about the differences. Another display for example teaches you the differences between dolphins and porpoises.
Also, great gift shop where you can find some things go bring back to friends or family, while supporting a good cause.
