Sure -- you can take the boring train or bus (or, heavens, even drive) to Salem from Boston. But, isn't a nice water trip enticing. The catamaran leaves from the Long Wharf in Boston and drops you at the Salem Ferry terminal, about a 15 minutes walk from downtown (with signs to see on you way there). The catamaran is pleasant, with plenty of seats and tables indoors and outdoors, on two decks. There is a snack bar (with free ginger candies if the rolling seas get to you) and less than an hour after leaving you're in Salem. A nice bonus is a tourist narration of the sights in and history of Boston Harbor at the Boston end of the trip, and a similar narration about the area from Marblehead to Salem at the Salem end of the trip. The middle of the trip does take you on what can be somewhat rough waters (the remains of hurricane Maria were churning the seas when I went on the trip). But even though I am not a strong fan of water based transportation, I found it pleasant.

Thank Michael F

The best way to go between Salem and Boston with a 50 minute trip. Free Parking. Refreshing, especially on a hot day. Pricey BUT the secret of saving is to take the Salem to Boston at 7 am in the morning and return 5:30 PM- totaling $16 (Monday thru Fridays) rather than the regular $45.00. round trip. One exception... Fridays you can return at 5:30 or 8 PM. Alchole served, expensive, Can of Beer $5.00.

The Ferry is a one hour trip from Boston-Salem. My trip was canceled due to rough seas from the remnants of a hurricane. I rebooked the return from Salem to Boston. Glad I did. The train is faster, and cheaper, but approaching Boston by sea is a unique experience.

This is a great way to travel from Boston to Salem and back. The boat is pleasant and clean with plenty of seating. It takes only 55 minutes to do the trip. We all very much enjoyed the trip.

Stayed in Boston and booked ferry on line for a day trip to Salem. Booking was straight forward. Wharf was easy to find.
The ferry staff were efficient we left and arrived on time both ways.
The ferry was clean and offers a bar with snacks and drinks.
