This hotel is special - the rooms at the back have their own decks and are situated so that when you sit on the deck you have privacy and your own little rain forest to boot. The rooms are lovely and the town is small enough so that you can walk to everywhere. Free wi-fi. Lovely, helpful owners. Rooms are very large. Breakfast is ordered the night before and brought in. You are also only one block from The Landing restaurant.

Room Tip: Get a room at the back with your own deck looking out on the rain forest. Well worth any up-charge.

We stayed at a 2 bedroom apartment at Punga Grove for 2 nights several days ago. It is conveniently located and within walking distance to restaurants and supermarket.

Hubby and older boys went for helihike while my little girl and I went for a scenic glacier flight and landing. They were understanding that my girl and I will be back within an hour or so, and made up the apartment for us very quickly.

The apartment itself was spacious. Bathroom huge. I love the wood like tiles on the bathroom floor. Gives it a warm and welcoming feel instead of cold and utilitarian like most other motel bathrooms.

A good selection of DVD were available and sure kept the kids well occupied.

The apartment was quite old, but overall pretty well maintained. It is not cheap, but then understandable given the location.

We only stayed overnight, but it was a most pleasant stay. The room was great, not modern, but comfortable and well maintained. The management has taken care with looking after this older hotel. Reception staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: I think you could choose any room. For what it is, it is great value for money.... you can't go...

We had 2 nights here in a spacious 1 bedroom apartment. It is very well positioned for the bars and restaurants of this small town. The manager was very welcoming and friendly. There was a small patio area to the rear flanked by shrubs and trees - looked nice in late winter/early spring so I can imagine it would be lovely in the summer. Plenty of parking at the front.

As we were there in October the only minor down side was the heating, one electric heater in the living room and a portable heater in the bedroom. Ironically as the living room was so large the heater couldn't really cope with the space, but we just moved the portable heater to give it a boost.

The staff in the local tourist info i-site were very helpful, so worthwhile popping in there to see what you can do whilst in and around Franz Josef. We drove up to the car park at the start of the walk to the glacier, just took a few minutes, and the walk wasn't more than 30 mins to the closest point you can reach on foot. The steep valley sides and waterfalls, and the rock formations are well worth the walk alone. Having spoken to some people who had visited before it seems the glacier has receded quite a bit. If you want to get a closer look there are options of taking a helicopter or a guided walk onto the glacier. Do not try to go onto the glacier on your own or even cross the ropes, it's extremely dangerous and there are notices of what has happened to unfortunate people who have not heeded the warnings.

Just a really decent place to stay. The town is small so it's walking distance to all the local cafes, restaurants and bars - and even the hot pools. The room was a good size and the view was of nice tropical plants.
