Mr. Rushmore National Memorial has changed considerably since my visit as a child in the late 1960's. It is a very enjoyable experience, which is hard to explain. It was a very aesthetically pleasing experience that you must see to fully appreciate.

The national monument is an average and not overly exciting visit but the black hills are beautiful and I will return to stay at one of the picturesque lakes in the area. Deadwood S.D was a nice little community filled with casinos but still the breath taking landscape and wildlife are the main attraction here, plan to stay in the black hills and enjoy nature. From Winter Park Colorado to Sturgis S.D. the pine trees are being destroyed by the pine beetles.
Black Hawk Co. is also a good place to get in a little gambling.

Take the time to sit and study the monument or you will not be able to appreciate it. Be sure to take the Park Ranger tour.

This place was a thrill for me. Always wanted to go here. Almost too much for me in my walker. Wished I had used a wheelchair

Driving through South Dakota was delightful; I learned about their large ethanol business (miles and miles of corn being processed at large plants), that buffalo still roam on the huge acreage that covers this beautiful state, and that Wall Drug is still something to see along the way. However, the best part of the trip was arriving in the Black Hills and visiting the Mt. Rushmore National Historic site. The work done by Borglund and hundreds of men that helped him sculpt that mountain is truly incredible. To memoralize the important presidents who helped shaped our country was moving; just wondering who would be the next candidate -- word is, it would be Ronald Reagan if the work were to continue. I've always loved the forest, so driving through the Black Hills National Forest was awe inspiring; unfortunately, there is some loss of ponderosa pines due to an infestation of beetles, but the forest is still beautiful. Just wish I could have seen it all in its natural, original state when God first created it.
