I have to say that we arrived at Percy's Country Hotel with a degree of scepticism. Could it really be as good as our fellow TA reviewers made it out to be? Well YES, it is!

It's no surprise that Tina has won many accolades for her cooking. The fixed menu was always a delight, with most ingredients sourced either from the estate or locally. The gluten-free sesame toast was a wonderful part of our hearty breakfasts.

The room, Tarragon, was tastefully decorated and had all you would need for a short break, including a small fridge.

Tony was a warm and knowledgeable host. His recommendations for wine to match the menu were always good, especially the house red, which was lovely.

Lastly, it was a real privilege to see the beavers going about their business in the wild - we couldn't have done it without the loan of wellies though!

Overall, if you are looking for a peaceful place to stay for a short break in Devon with exceptional food, come to Percy's. We'll be back!

Thanks Esther & Cal for a super review. We shall be organising some dawn chorus birdwatching with a top man in March, April and May next year so do let us know if this is something that may interest you. I am told that there will be footage of our beavers on C5 sometime in the spring! Best Wishes, Tina & Tony.

June 2017

We have just returned from a wonderful 3 days spent at Percy's Country Hotel and Restaurant. We chose the hotel as there was a small advertisement in the Coeliac Society Magazine. My husband David has Coeliac Disease. We had no prior knowledge of what to expect, but on reading some reviews we realised that both food and hotel came highly rated - with food awards galore.

In the event we were blown away by the excellence of every aspect of our stay - although the food has to take top billing!
On arrival we were greeted by our host Tony, who couldn't have been more charming and he showed us to a delightful room (Lavender), which was very comfortable and spacious. To say that dinner that evening was excellent is an understatement. It was delicious and the quality of everything was superb. This must be the first place we have dined that David's gluten free requirement was so well catered for and that we could both eat the same food including desserts - even sticky toffee pudding with home made ice cream. This in a Michelin recommended restaurant ! Everything is locally sourced with most of the ingredients home produced.

The following morning we met Tony's wife Tina who is the sole chef at the restaurant. She is the real star and it was a privilege to meet her in person. Her attention to detail is meticulous and she prides herself on being able to cater for all types of diets, not just gluten free. Her enthusiasm is boundless for trying to 'improve' all the time - and she has been at the top of her game for 20+ years. On our last day there she had baked two different types of GF breads for us all to try at breakfast in an effort to find a loaf that all customers would find acceptable. (GF bread is notoriously difficult to make appealing!!.) She succeeded though as both were delicious as our fellow diners also confirmed. Needless to say, breakfast is a knockout too...

Thank you Tina and Tony for making our short break such a memorable one. We will definitely be back. You have a real gem.

Thanks for the fab review. Great pleasure to meet you both! Glad you liked the gluten + dairy free breads. If you would like the recipe for the sticky toffee pudding just drop me a line and I'll send it over! Best Wishes, Tina.

A friendly warm welcome by Tony is just the start. The food is always superb; we love the idea of a fixed menu as this encourages us to try food we would not normally try and we are never disappointed. Walking in the grounds brings many delights especially seeing the beavers at dusk and dawn. The beavers have been allowed to create their own home and it is a privilege to watch them at work creating dams while the bats fly overhead.

Thank you very much for the review! So glad you enjoyed the dawn and dusk adventures. With the warm weather we are experiencing at the moment, there are a great deal of large beautiful dragonflies and damselflies buzzing over the ponds and lagoons.

We also spotted some very young golden tench, which, unlike their parents, are bright orange and don't have any black markings. I think they have attracted a heron, which has flown up from the ponds on numerous occasions. Our wildlife friends have been busy beavers and look forward to your next visit to show you what they've been up to! Very best Wishes, Tina & Tony.

It's always so great to return to Percy's and now I am sure it's at least my sixth visit. I almost feel it's like a secret that I only want to tell a few people in case it gets too overrun. This visit is perfection as not only do we get to be spoilt by Tina's fabulous faultless food we got to see wild beavers in the grounds. They have been living there for about five years and each time we came we longed to see them and this time we were not disappointed. After a beautiful dinner we went down to the furthest pond and we're blessed at the sight of five beavers. They have been busy since our last visit in December and we saw them socialising and building their incredible system of dams. To be able to see such special secretive animals was a very humbling experience and we spent an hour an a half watching the families work feed and play. We had to leave as it got dark but you can be sure we shall be back there tonight. Tony and Tina have always been so enthusiastic about their special wildlife guests and it doesn't come better than getting up close to one of natures rarest sights.

What a treasure this place is - we had a delightful evening in the company of our hosts Tina and Tony, the most delicious dinner worthy of the best London restaurants - but radiating freshness and flavours straight from the garden and the farmyard, far too much unbelievable wine, a perfect night's sleep, and were up at dawn feeling surprisingly refreshed for a beautiful walk down the green lane to their magical ponds for birdsong and dragonflies and any other surprises we could find. Too heavenly for words.
